Opinion: Tottenham fans have seen the end of fringe man’s time in north London

|

Tottenham Hotspur have had some real issues with their full-backs this season. Many different players have been used at both left-back and right-back, and the news broke on Wednesday that Kyle Walker-Peters, the club’s young academy graduate defender, has left on loan for Southampton (BBC).

The youngster is one who has always looked good when the fans have been watching. Walker-Peters first stepped onto the scene away at Newcastle on the opening day of the 2017/18 season, and in that clash, he was named man of the match for his efforts, however, he then went on to struggle to hold down his place.

The fans will likely not be set to see any more of Walker-Peters now either. The 22-year-old has been one that both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho have overlooked for minutes in the senior side, and under the latter, we’ve only seen one outing from the academy man.

The talks that Walker-Peters was going to leave the club have been rife. Southampton showed up as an option early doors in the window, and whilst his move is only a loan, for now, most supporters expect this to be one that becomes a permanent move in the summer.

The young Englishman’s five appearances this season say all you need to know about where he stands amongst the current crop of Tottenham defenders, and when the likes of Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez and Moussa Sissoko have been used there ahead of him, something is very wrong.

Should Walker-Peters Be Sold?

Yes

No

The fans will just hope that Walker-Peters can bring them in some cash in the summer which can be put towards a new full-back or two, but it looks very much like the Walker-Peters’ Tottenham days are behind him, and the fans will be keeping tabs on him during his time at St. Mary’s.
