Opinion: Tottenham could agree deal with Newcastle for Toby Alderweireld replacement

|

According to the Mirror, Tottenham are interested in Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar and could make the central defender a replacement for Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian international has a £25m release clause this summer and has been linked with Manchester United among other clubs.

Schar joined the Magpies for £3m from Deportivo La Coruna last summer and has enjoyed a successful debut campaign at St James’ Park. He’s made 18 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, scoring and creating four goals this season.

The Swiss international has averaged a tackle (43) or interception (47) every 17 minutes, in addition to winning 55 aerial duels and making 106 clearances. Schar has struggled with indiscipline, however, making 24 fouls and picking up 10 yellow cards so he may need guidance on managing his temperament.

Nevertheless, Schar has made a big impression in the Premier League and has attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal as a result. Newcastle signed him for very little in July 2018 but may request a lot more money due to his rising value.

The Toon Army’s record sale for a central defender is Jonathan Woodgate (to Real Madrid for £13.4m). Schar’s asking price shouldn’t be far off which is more than affordable for Spurs.
