Opinion: The experiment has failed, time for Tottenham to revert to what they know

|

Tottenham have been in turmoil this season and plenty of the fans are desperate for change. Whether that change comes in the personnel who are being used or how they are used is up for debate, but for a lot of people who have been watching the Lilywhites, the necessary change is an obvious one.

For a lot of supporters, it looks like the thing being picked out as a problem at the club is the system that Mauricio Pochettino continues to use. This season, and during pre-season, Tottenham have been keen on using a midfield diamond shape, lining up in a 4-4-2 with the midfield four having a defensive midfielder, a #10 and two box-to-box options.

It also seems that the Lilywhites are not alone in their frustrations, as Moussa Sissoko also came out after the loss to have his say on the diamond, as he claimed whilst speaking to RMC Sport, via ESPN, that the Tottenham side tire too quickly when using that particular system.

It’s not an audacious claim either. This Mauricio Pochettino side is famed for being relentless in their pressing, immensely fit and able to mix it up with any side in the world with their dynamism, yet when they faced Bayern Munich on Tuesday, they looked completely out of puff in the second half.

That’s why it might be time for the Lilywhites to revert to what they’re excellent at. The 4-2-3-1 system that Pochettino has built this Spurs side up playing for the majority of his time at the club has to be the way to go, even if one of the key parts of his management is the tactical fluidity.

A midfield pivot containing two of Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks with three of Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura behind Harry Kane looks to be the safest option, and with a response needed against Brighton tomorrow, surely the best thing to do is to go with what you know?
