Opinion: Spurs landing £50.4m-valued star would be one of Levy’s biggest triumphs

|

As Daniel Levy rules out any serious spending this summer due to the financial impact of recent events, one particular target that should be on our chairman’s radar is out-of-favour Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho – who could be made available in a loan-to-buy deal.

Coutinho, despite currently being at odds over his future at the Camp Nou, has still managed to impress when given the opportunity on a temporary spell at Bayern Munich this season – scoring eight goals and assisting six others in the Bundesliga over 2019/2020.

Should Spurs sign Coutinho?

Yes, still a class asset

No, spent force

As a recent report from Football Insider suggests, the Brazilian could be made available for a debatable bargain £8 million loan deal once his current term at Bayern expires – and his past exploits in the Premier League could well prove he would be worth the swoop.

Indeed, as per Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old bagged a noteworthy 54 goals and 45 assists in all competitions during his time at Liverpool – which may highlight the notion he is a proven asset in one of the most prestigious leagues in world football.

Still approaching his prime, despite the fact he has failed to impress at Barca, Coutinho could still have a point to prove – with Spurs emerging as candidates to sign the player according to recent reports.

Even though Levy would be reluctant to pay the full cost of his salary, estimated at £200,000-per-week, some potential negotiation could gift Spurs wiggle room – especially given the Catalans’ alleged desire to offload the £50.4 million-valued star.

According to WhoScored, only Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min have averaged more shots per game than Coutinho – with the latter man making the same amount of key passes as Son in that time.

It’s clear Coutinho would be worth the gamble based off his numbers, and if Levy could find a way to negotiate a fair loan-to-buy agreement, the deal could be one of his biggest transfer triumphs to date.
