Opinion: Mauricio Pochettino selling 25-year-old Tottenham man is a mistake

|

Eric Dier has been linked with a move away from Tottenham, but Mauricio Pochettino would be making a big mistake letting him go. The 25-year-old has been in the matchday squad in all but one of Spurs’ Premier League games this season, so he clearly has a part to play.

Dier is behind Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks in the midfield pecking order, but he has more of a future at Tottenham than Victor Wanyama. The England international is also capable of playing at right-back and centre-back.

He’s made four appearances in all competitions and has been left out of the squad only once in 13 games. Pochettino has a place for Dier in the team, so why would he offload the midfield midway through the season? Tottenham have been tipped to sign Bruno Fernandes in his stead, but he could cost £65m.

The Daily Mail say Dier, Serge Aurier, Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama and Christian Eriksen could be sold in January, but it’s far more likely that one or two players are shown the door. Dier being on that list is a mistake.
