Opinion: Mauricio Pochettino needs £60k-per-week Tottenham man despite signing replacement

|

Danny Rose finds his career at a crossroads at Tottenham after a transfer deadline day of mixed fortunes. Spurs rejected a bid from Watford for his signature but also brought in a player in Ryan Sessegnon who could be his long-term replacement.

After signing a long-term deal over the summer, Ben Davies is expected to be first-choice at left-back while Sessegnon is his understudy. All is not lost for Rose, however. The £60k-per-week defender may no longer be a regular under Mauricio Pochettino, but he does have an important role to play.

Tottenham will be playing in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup this season, and could be forced to play up to 63 games if they go deep in their cup competitions – 38 in the league, 13 in Europe, six in the FA Cup and six in the EFL Cup.

Pochettino will still need Rose, even with Sessegnon as an option at left-back. The 19-year-old from Fulham is still developing his talent and may not be deemed Davies’ direct replacement in Europe or in important league matches. The Spurs boss managed to give 37 appearances to Rose and 40 appearances to Davies last season, so he should be able to juggle all three players.
