Opinion: Mauricio Pochettino could start Tottenham midfielder against Southampton

|

Eric Dier could be in line to start against Southampton on Saturday after replacing Harry Winks in midweek. Dier was introduced against Borussia Dortmund before the hour mark after Winks picked up a groin injury, and the 25-year-old could be picked by Mauricio Pochettino to partner Moussa Sissoko at the heart of the midfield.

Dier has made 22 appearances in all competitions this season – 15 in the Premier League, five in the Champions League, one in the FA Cup and one in the EFL Cup. The English international has featured only twice in the Premier League since December 2018 as he’s had an appendectomy and suffered from tonsillitis, but Pochettino is a big fan.

The Tottenham manager chose Dier over Victor Wanyama against Dortmund, despite the latter having featured more regularly in recent weeks, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him handed his first league start in three months. Southampton are struggling this season, sitting one place and two points above the relegation zone after 29 games.

Spurs are big favourites to pick up all three points as their opponents have suffered three defeats in their last four games and have won the second-fewest home games (3) this season.
