Opinion: Jose Mourinho’s actions could land himself in further acrimony

|

He just can’t keep his mouth shut, can he?

Jose Mourinho has been at it again, this time with record signing Tanguy Ndombele. The Portuguese tactician singled the Frenchman out following our 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday after he brought him off at half-time.

Despite the fact we dominated the first-half, we still conceded to a Chris Wood goal, before Dele Alli levelled the proceedings after the break. Despite this, the boss was far from happy with the £53.8m midfielder, claiming that we didn’t have a midfield and expected more from Ndombele, quoted by BBC Sport.

This isn’t the first time that he has slated his players in the press, and certainly won’t be the last. He criticised Juan Mata and Ander Herrera during his time at Manchester United after a defeat to Huddersfield Town. The continuation of his public persecutions led to him losing the dressing room and eventually had his P45 handed to him.

Was Mourinho right to criticise Ndombele?

Yes

No

You would think that Mourinho would learn his lesson and start being a bit more supportive of his players. This team has not won any major trophies in football, despite coming ever so close in Madrid last season. The boss needs to place himself in the mindset of a player that is not used to winning. Such ruthlessness could destroy a player’s confidence and cause a dressing room rift that only he will suffer from.

Mourinho is in danger ending another managerial tenure in acrimony. There has to be a line in the sand that is drawn, either Daniel Levy or his press officer needs to tell him to stop writing headlines for himself. As entertaining as it may be for others, it is hampering our progress as a club and must be addressed in the board room.
