Opinion: Forget Eriksen woes and Lo Celso injury, when defender’s return will be massive

|

So far at Tottenham this season, the emphasis has been a lot on Christian Eriksen and the attacking midfield position, for obvious reason. However, the issues are rooted in this squad and start deeper, namely in the defence and at right-back.

Davinson Sanchez has started two of the Lilywhites’ last three games at right-back, and his inability to attack down the right whilst being skinned by his winger at every opportunity is proving to be costly, which is why Juan Foyth’s return from injury will be massive for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The versatile Argentine who has doubled up as both a cover at centre-half as well as right-back, suffered a nasty looking ankle injury against Bayern Munich over the summer, and as a result of that it was confirmed, as per the BBC, that he would be set to resume training in September.

Now, though, seeing as it is the 20th of September, a return date for Foyth must be in sight. Football.London have done a roundup of the injuries at Spurs ahead of their trip to face Leicester City tomorrow, and they claim that the defender could be set to face Southampton as his first game back.

That game against the Saints on the 28th would be an ideal one for Foyth to return in too. The defender proved to be very impressive in the right-back role last season, and according to The Evening Standard from late July, the youngster is keen to compete for his place in the middle and on the right of the backline.

It’s a well-known fact that Foyth used to be an attacking midfield when playing in the Estudiantes academy, thanks to Alasdair Gold, and that gives him the edge going forward from right-back, something that has been dearly missed when Davinson Sanchez has played.
