Opinion: Defender could leave Tottenham in January

|

Serge Aurier was made available for sale by Tottenham over the summer but failed to secure a move away before the transfer window shut. AS Monaco & Paris Saint-Germain showed an interest in the defender but failed to lodge an acceptable bid.

The 26-year-old has no future under Mauricio Pochettino and has been overlooked at right-back despite Juan Foyth and Kyle Walker-Peters’ respective injuries. A move in January may benefit all parties as a result, but Aurier may be short on suitors.

He hasn’t played a single minute of football this season, having been an unused substitute against Aston Villa (August 10) & Arsenal (September 1) while being left out of the matchday squad against Manchester City (August 17) & Newcastle United (August 25).

The Ivorian international set Tottenham back £23m in August 2017 and has three years remaining on a contract worth £70k-per-week/£3.6m-a-year. It’s hard to see clubs shelling out so much money to sign Aurier given he’s out of favour with Spurs, so Daniel Levy might have to lower his asking price.

CIES value the right-back at £9m while Transfermarkt’s market value for Aurier is £16.2m. Time will tell if bids are lodged in January, however.
