Explained: Serge Aurier ‘unlikely to be considered’ for Tottenham against Arsenal

|

According to Dave Hytner of the Guardian, Serge Aurier is ‘unlikely to be considered’ against Arsenal on September 1. Tottenham have an injury crisis at right-back, but Mauricio Pochettino may not turn to the Ivorian international to solve his problem.

Spurs are currently without Kyle Walker-Peters due to a hamstring injury that he picked up against Newcastle. Juan Foyth remains sidelined too, having suffered an ankle injury earlier this summer. Despite this, Aurier doesn’t appear to be in the running to replace the pair.

The Guardian believe Moussa Sissoko or Eric Dier could be called upon at right-back. Sissoko operated in the makeshift role when Walker-Peters came off against Newcastle while Dier played at right-back when he initially joined Tottenham.

Aurier’s omission raises doubts over his future at the club. The 26-year-old was made available for sale at the same time as Kieran Trippier, but no deal materialised. AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with his signature, but he still remains a Tottenham player.

Pochettino has lost faith in the defender in the last 12 months, handing Aurier only 563 minutes of Premier League football in 2018/19, while preferring Walker-Peters and Foyth at right-back. The Tottenham boss has struggled to find him a new club, however, so there’s the possibility that Aurier stays until January.
