NLD mistake suggests time is up for Lloris at Spurs – Opinion

|

Despite what the media says, Spurs actually started pretty well in the first ten mins yesterday, compared to previous games. However, that soon all changed in the 14th minute when Hugo Lloris fumbled Bukayo Saka’s shot/cross into his own net, to give the Gunners the lead. Match report here and Player ratings here

Some seem to have defended Lloris highlighting the deflection off Ryan Sessegnon – but a mistake like that in a game of that magnitude, is simply unforgivable. The mistake was made worse by the fact it was the Frenchman’s fourth error that has led to a goal this season, which is more than any other player in the league.

What has also seemed to anger the Spurs fanbase is despite being club captain Lloris failed to face the media after the game, leaving media duties to Eric Dier. That is not the first time the Frenchman has hid away from his mistakes, with the keeper often failing to face the cameras when things are tough. If Lloris was too leave the club, surely Harry Kane would pick up the armband as he has been shown to step up to the plate in times of need. Shown by the striker facing the media straight after his heart-breaking penalty miss in England’s World Cup quarter final loss to France.

The eye-test of course suggests Lloris is on the decline but if you were to take a glance at his stats (via FB Ref), you will find that the underlying numbers also suggest that Spurs maybe should find a new shot stopper. For example Lloris’ save percentage has fell year on year since the 2019-20 season, falling from 80.8% in 2020 to 69.6% this season.

Lloris has been a fantastic servant for the club over his ten year spell, but it is clearly time to move on from the 36-year-old and it seems the Spurs hierarchy agree, with club reportedly keeping tabs on a number of keepers (read here).
