Newcastle make U-turn on Danny Rose transfer as Tottenham have decision to make

|

According to the Football Insider, Newcastle have pulled out of the race to sign Danny Rose. The 30-year-old looked on his way out of Tottenham, but he may have to stay due to lack of interest. Rose is surplus to requirements as Ben Davies is first-choice at left back and is in the last year of his deal, but Tottenham risk losing him for nothing if they can’t cash in the summer.

What went wrong last season?

Rose went into the 2019/20 as a regular, but his poor form led to him being dropped and replaced by Ben Davies. Ryan Sessegnon became second-choice.

The 30-year-old made 12 Premier League appearances last season, nine of which came under Mauricio Pochettino (May 27, 2014 – November 19, 2019) before his sacking and only three of which came under Jose Mourinho (November 20, 2019 – present) before he was loaned out to Newcastle United (January 30, 2020 – July 31, 2020).

Things picked up for Rose in the North-East – 13/16 appearances in all competitions and 1030/1440 minutes played. He featured in 81% of United’s matches and 71.5% of the minutes available. Rose has been public about his desire to stay at Tottenham, but Daniel Levy will be desperate to cash in while the left-back still has value.

If not Newcastle, where could Rose end up?

Manchester City and Manchester United were interested in Rose back in 2017, but it’s highly unlikely that the two sides will return this summer – City have Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back while United have Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.

Liverpool have Andrew Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas, Chelsea have Marcos Alonso and Emerson, Arsenal have Kieran Tierney, Sead Kolasinac and Bukayo Sako, Wolverhampton Wanderers have Jonny Castro and Ruben Vinagre, Everton have Lucas Digne and Leicester City have Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs, so Rose may be taking a step down if he leaves Tottenham.

Summary

Rose has one year remaining on his deal and is surplus to requirements, so a sale this summer would suit all parties. There isn’t a lot of interest, however, so Tottenham may have to lower their demands or they risk losing Rose for nothing in 2021.
