Mitch’s 2022 Tottenham awards – Opinion

|

Well…2022 has been some year for Spurs fans, with Champions League qualification mixed in with a whole load of dramatic games, it really has been topsy-turvy year for Antonio Conte’s men.

So with the year coming to an end, us here at VitalSpurs thought it would be worthwhile creating our own little end of year awards, to highlight the players achievements or lack of achievements this year.

Here are my (Mitch) end of year awards, Omar’s will be coming out slightly later today.

There is only one place to start my awards and that is of course player of the year

Mitch’s Player of the Year: Harry Kane

I tried to go a bit rogue and choose someone else for this award but it simply cannot be anyone else but Harry Kane. His goals in the back end of last season were absolutely vital in Spurs achieving Champions League football and luckily for us fans he’s carried that red-hot form into this season bagging 13 goals in the league so far.

Mitch’s Young Player of the Year (under 23): Dejan Kulusevski

Like with Harry Kane, I think there can only be one winner of this award and that is of course our Swedish sensation Dejan Kulusevski. The Swede has been a revelation ever since arriving from Juventus in January, with his quality in the final third absolutely transforming our attack in the back end of the last season. His importance to the side has also been highlighted this season, with the winger’s absence really affecting the side in October.

Mitch’s Moment of the year: Tottenham’s sensational 3-2 win over Manchester City

I have slightly cheated on this award as my moment of the year is not necessarily a single moment, it is more a match. As Tottenham’s dramatic win over Man City back in February, has to be one of the best games I’ve watched as a Spurs fan in some time. With Harry Kane providing a masterclass of a performance, mixed in with the late drama of two goals in 90+ minutes, the game simply had everything.

Mitch’s Unsung Hero: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

This was probably the hardest award to give out with a number of players potentially being the club’s unsung hero this year – but I had to give it to our dependable Dane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The midfielder’s consistency this year has been the main reason for him winning this award, with him never dropping below a 7/10 on matchday’s. Some other worthy nominations for the award would of been Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies, with both being a big part of Tottenham’s success this year

Mitch’s Flop of the year: Emerson Royal

I don’t really like to publicly slander players as I know the impact it can have on someone but Emerson’s performances this year have frustrated me like no other Spurs player has before. His total lack of quality in the final third has really hampered the side at times this year, made even worse by the fact Conte has persevered with the Brazilian.

Mitch’s Best Goal of the Year: Steven Bergwijn vs Leicester

This goal does not win the award based on technique or skill but more on the drama surrounding it. The Dutchman was slotted in behind perfectly by Harry Kane and rounded Kasper Schmeichel, to slot home the winner in the 97th minute, sending the Spurs away end into absolute pandemonium.
