According to the official website of the 2006 African nations tournament Spurs striker Mido is set to remain in England for Spurs game with Liverpool on the January 14th before joining up with the rest of the squad.

Mido was due to join the national team around the 6th January for a pre-tournament training camp but the player is quoted as saying:

?I will be with the team six days before the start of the tournament and I believe this is enough time to prepare for the first match against Libya.?

?I know that the regulations give the national team the right to call me up 14 days before the tournament but I see no reason to miss such an important match for my club – which is also important – to play a friendly game.?

The tournament kicks off for Egypt on the 20th January with a game against Libya.

The site also reports that whilst Egypt coach Shawky Gharieb did not make an official statement on Mido?s position he did not deny that the player?s decision would potentially embarrass the Egyptian technical staff.

?We will not take any immediate action towards Mido, but if we permit him to stay with his club, we will have to give the other seven European-based players the same kind of treatment,? said Gharieb.
