Match Thread – Will Spurs Fire Against Fulham Or Are We Set For More Disappointment

|

Following on from Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wednesday evening’s Premier League clash sees us welcome Fulham to White Hart Lane.

With manager Jose Mourinho directly blaming the squad for the lack of attacking prowess and insisting that defending the one goal lead for 89 minutes was not his instruction, the only inevitable outcome against Fulham is that we will see a very attacking starting line up, who will play on the front foot and in a more Spurs like way – as the players won’t ignore him for a second time…would they?

On an injury front, Giovani Lo Celso is yet to be given a return date following his injury, but whatever Gareth Bale felt in the Crystal Palace clash that led to his non-appearance after the half time break, it’s expected he’ll be fine for this one, so should return to the substitutes bench.

Update – Bale has been ruled out for the next few weeks with a calf strain, so probably four or so matches.

Let’s hope we get ourselves back on track in this one as whilst Fulham won’t be a walk in the park, there should be an expectation that this is one we comfortably win.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

I wonder why Klopp and Pep have never been fired?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Thinking about it… I don’t much go for the personalties of either Klopp or Pep. They kind of annoy me… But like Jose, I have no hatred for them. I just find them all a bit irritating.

But I’d love to have either one of them at Spurs. I think it might have something to do with how their teams play the game of football… Strange that, I know. 😉

  • PompeyYid says:

Well that was a good result last night, we didn’t drop any points lol!

Here’s hoping for a great rest of season but more! importantly this Covid pandemic finally comes to an end for all our sakes!

HT…am with you regards Klippityi Klop and Pep.

BS…a very good post regards JM and coach’s in general.

I am a Prime member and have been for 12 years, I love it simple as that.

And Finally HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my fellow Yids. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Oh silly me I forgot Leeds United next, without Billy Bremner, remember him lol!

Well what can we expect in our first game of the New Year, no changes or changes, I suppose we will just have to wait and see, as normal I am going for a WIN! for us.

Will our coach become even more “Marmite”? again! we just have to wait and see. COYS

    I know this much PY…
I’d rather see Spurs play like the latest version of Leeds United… and then lose. Than watch Spurs play like they have been playing… and lose.

I have not seen any abuse aimed at Mourinho. Lots of criticism (rightly so). His uncompromising, conceited and stubborn behaviour on top of his bullying to anyone he takes a dislike to is likely to attract fair criticism particularly from the Spurs purists that want a manager/coach that will play attractive, entertaining, winning football. Mourinho gets away with most things because he was box office and successful. However, failure means the top person is responsible and will be sacked when things go rapidly wrong. At the moment, Mourinho still has time to put things right and maybe win something.
Apparently, there is already unrest in the dressing room from players who have taken the blame for Mourinho’s tactics and defensive team selection. The players responded to Mourinho’s tactics for fear of being made a scapegoat like the unprofessional treatment of Dele. Mourinho has to realise the club is far bigger than him and we have a proud history that is being tarnished by someone who sadly puts himself above everything.

  • Niall D says:

    HT that’s a given.
TQ the difference being that Pep wasn’t sacked.
I’m not particularly questioning Tuchel, I don’t know enough about him.
All I said was why take him if PSG sacked him and the French league is an easier league than ours.
I know you may come back about JM’s sackings, however when we employed him (JM), even on a bad spell with Man U he got to 2nd position in the league and two trophies. Plus his league /Cup credentials really are second to none.
Like it or not at the time he did have an impressive CV.
Which Tuchel doesn’t, plus Tuchel is being replaced by the manager we sacked.
Now I’m not saying all is rosy (atm) but we are still in the running for trophies and a decent league position.
I’m as unhappy as anyone over the past month or so results and our playing style.
Indeed we may get rid of JM.
But I still say we were pretty crap even before he came and he inherited a very much disjointed team lost 6 first team players and moved to a new stadium.
It says it all really when last month was the first time N’Dombele and Lo Ceslo actually got to play together and it was only around October that LoCeslo and Kane got to play together for the first time.
I think we are in a process of steadying the ship.
It ain’t good to watch sometimes uncomfortable, but part of me gets it, though I don’t like it.
Have we progressed I don’t know,.
Our points ratio and cup positions say we have.
Could Tuchel become our next manager I don’t see why not but I also don’t see why..
    Happy new year folks.

Wentworth. It’s obvious that those defending Jose right now, and using his past successes as good reason to, are completely failing to understand the concept, that many of us just want to see good football being played. Regardless of the persona of our manager. And in spite of whether we like him or not…….

I will support our manager when I see good, enjoyable and winning football being played.

Jose knows how to do this. But he has chosen not to in recent matches. Or he has simply given his players the wrong messages and somehow stifled all of their creativity. (That, as we all should know, is not unusual with him). And this to me is blatantly obvious…

We played positive, attacking football vs Man U and the Saints. What happened next? We thrashed them!

Is this some kind of coincidence?

One of those clubs are now 2nd in the PL and the other on the same points as Spurs…. Lose against Leeds and they will also share the same points as Spurs… And despite having conceded 30 PL goals. (They have also scored 30).

And although I believe that we are easily good enough to wipe the floor with Leeds. Equally, I think they are also capable of embarrassing us on the day, if we continue to play our negative, sit back and defend tactics……

This frustrates the hell out of me when I was starting to buy into what JM was doing…

I simply want to watch Spurs win, playing a more balanced game of football… What’s so controversial about that? LOL!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Niall……..Tuchel became the Ligue 1 side’s boss in June 2018, winning two league titles, the French Cup and French League Cup. They also reached the Champions League final for the first time last season, losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich. That’s not a bad CV in just two years at PSG. My only reason for suggesting him as an alternative to Jose is that his sides play more attractive football to what Jose is serving up.

Anyway…..Happy New Year to you and yours and also to each and every one of you who has contributed to some lively debate here in 2020, I’m sure we will have lots more in 2021! :- )

Its funny how people segregate different matches. We played open football against United and it came off. We did the same thing against West Ham, how did that go ? Our next opponents, Leeds, are a great example of all or nothing play. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. The trouble is its unlikely to come off enough times to win a title. When it comes to managers Klopp would be great, but Guardiola ? He has only ever won things when he has had the most cash and could buy titles. Since we don’t have the oil revenue to do that it would be pointless.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

To end the year on a high note, with Liverpool dropping points again and other teams showing frailties we are still in the mix for everything in the new year. COYS!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Jod, Leeds won the Championship title by a clear 10 points, playing their way….. They are currently just 3 points behind Spurs in the PL.

Anyway, talking of titles and oil money has nothing to do with how Pep sets his teams up to play the football the way they play. The man quite obviously knows his football….. As does Bielsa, at Leeds.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

And, your point about giving up a 3 goal lead to WHU, only to draw… It’s not valid when we also gave up 3 points from leading late into the matches vs Wolves and Palace too, whilst playing a defensive game. Different score-lines, same result!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Anyway…… I’ve exhausted my side of this debate. As it is obvious that others are arguing about end results and I’m simply talking about how I view the football currently being played regardless of results… So, I’m banging my head against a brick wall here…

I’m not going to wish you all A Happy New Year. But I will wish you all a good day, every day, for the rest of your lives….

    Peace and Love.

    Up the Spurs!

  • Geofspurs says:

Half of Australia has just moved into the new year (it’s all about time zones). Sadly, it looks no different than the old one! But it is an anniversary year for THFC …. well, we did win the FA Cup in 1921. More of the same please!

  • jod says:

Hot Tottingham – Have you looked at the premier league table ? Leeds are three points behind so are West Ham. Villa, Chelsea, City and Southampton are all on the same points, its a congested table but what exactly do you think it proves ? Do you seriously equate the championship and the premier league ? How many clubs come up as champions and don’t survive ? If you really believe that’s City’s spending had nothing to do with their titles you are obviously living in some fantasy world, I assume its more comforting than reality.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Jod, HNY to you too!

So, those facts about Leeds that are for real are somehow fantasy?!

Not anything apart from the facts I stated relates to anything you have just written…… I didn’t say or refer to any of all that, did I?

I certainly didn’t say that City’s spending has nothing to do with their titles……… I was simply talking about the way Pep likes his team to play his brand of football. Attacking football to be more succinct. Attacking football that has helped him to win titles. Or are you suggesting that the football being played has nothing at all to do with him?

But like I said above. I’m saying one thing but you and BS in particular, are arguing a point that has nothing to do with what I (and some others) are talking about on here… So we are all quite simply arguing with ourselves it would seem.

Anyway, I do like to fantasise sometimes…. Last night I fantasised about Spurs winning the PL title under Jose… Whilst playing the most beautiful football I have ever seen………. Ah such sweet dreams that are made of nonsense!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Meanwhile, back in the real world…

And when I’m at work tomorrow morning, wiping the arse and emptying the catheter of a severely disabled 30 year old man. Then after dressing him. And after giving him his medication, feeding him his breakfast and trying my darnest to make him smile throughout the indignity of it all… All this whilst I’m dressed like I’m ready for some chemical warfare! Then I will know just what reality is all about………..

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Respect to you and all carers HT………HNY!

  • TK says:

HT, I’m with you mate. I’ve written repeatedly that I want our team to play intelligent, creative football, and that’s what will satisfy me. I do not think life turns on championships won or dollars gained. What matters is how you live, and if your life involves playing football, what matters is how you play. Losers are often the biggest winners, no? Winning matches doesn’t not mean that you are a winner as a person. It matters more how you live and play than how many trophies–or trophy wives–you accumulate. There have been some big winners in the world who would make me ashamed if they were my offspring.
