Match Thread – Will Spurs Be United For The Red Of Manchester

|

With Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League hopes coming to an end in midweek as we were soundly beaten by German side RB Leipzig, it’s back to Premier League action this weekend for manager Jose Mourinho and like all Spurs fans, he will be desperately hoping we can return to winning ways in the clash against Manchester United on Sunday.

Welcoming another of his former sides to White Hart Lane for the game, having brought an end to our losing streak in the league with the point against Burnley…well a win and any kind of improvement in our performance levels would be welcome after a disappointing season.

Manchester United...

Win

Draw

Lose

Having now lost Steven Bergwijn to injury as well, fortunes definitely don’t seem to be favouring us and United won’t be rollovers either. There was some good news this week as Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies returned to first team training, but it would be a massive stretch for them to come into contention for this one – but at least our options should be somewhat boosted soon.

Whether or not that helps us to end the season in a stronger fashion is open for debate, but most fans will take what they can as good news at this moment in time.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

Will the match even go ahead? Could help us big time if the PL fixtures are put on hold for a few weeks and Euro 2020 postponed for a year.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

If they took the decision now to put off Euro tournament until 2021 and shut down PL for six weeks the players could take a 3 or 4 week break and have 2 or 3 weeks training before resuming the league which would then be completed by the end of June instead of the middle of May. The players could then have another shorter summer break of 2 or 3 weeks before resuming training with pre-season touring cancelled for obvious reasons.

Looks like an initial suspension until April 4th, bit pointless, won’t be anywhere near long enough.

  • PompeyYid says:

TQ2S….beat me to it, I was thinking exactly the same, but say postpone the Prem and all others for at least 6 weeks, in saying that it would also give our “wounded” a chance to get back to work.

Also crowds of fans travelling around the country cannot be helping, except to spreading the virus, here’s hoping they do postpone from right now. Still COYS 4 ever

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY……I think the availability of players is a major factor in the decision to suspend, if (as is suggested) most of us are likely to be hit by the virus anyway banning crowds in the open air probably won’t make a lot of difference.

  • Niall D says:

I’m 100% with both of you on this. There are many people who won’t show up to watch (just in case).
I think there may be some games already under threat. I think the football league should take the moral high ground and cancel for around 6 weeks rather than the 2 or 3 currently envisaged.
As you said it could be a positive for us at Tottenham but within the bigger picture it means nothing.
Hope everyone stays well. And PY Still COYS.

  • Geofspurs says:

Or they could simply play behind closed doors and in front of the TV cameras? One things for sure, it will get much worse before it gets better. I blame Levy!!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….I think they are maybe considering that as an option beyond April 4th but there is still the issue of the effect on the squads and coaching staff and their availability to play.

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. Yes, it’s all way too unpredictable. I guess there is even the possibility that the season won’t be completed at all …. especially if/when players in the PL and football League squads become infected.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    They already are Geof.

  • jod says:

Given our current situation I can’t see the suspension as anything but good news. Not only does it give us time to get players fit but it gives Jose a chance to work full time with the players on the training ground. If the Euros were also moved to next year we might start next season with a fully fit squad.

  • Niall D says:

Just read a report on Football London by Alister Gold. The Rapid Decline of Tottenham and Who is to Blame. Its worth a read. Unfortunately it doesn’t really give any solutions, but it puts into a fair perspective our recent past.

  • PompeyYid says:

jod….the selfishness in me agrees regards getting getting our “missing” back and of course JM having a bit of time to work with the squad, lol!

ND….read the same myself, as you say no real answers given. Still COYS 4 ever.

  • PompeyYid says:

Note am so selfish I wrote “getting” twice durh! lol! Still COYS 4 ever

  • Frank says:

Well supporters of the rest of the PL will get to feel what Spurs supporters have suffered all season. Football has been suspended at Spurs all season, now the rest can catch us up. Will Levy be on suicide watch as the takings dry up.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Frank….surely this is the moment when you should be grateful for Levy’s prudent financial management? 🙂

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Wow……it’s going to be barren times ahead for sports fans, especially if you are having to self-isolate. Thank heavens for Netflix and box sets!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Seriously though……this could be the moment where the super rich clubs will need to think about supporting the lower and non-league clubs who rely on gate receipts to pay their staff.

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. Too true. I’m not sure how I can survive without football, WTA and Aussie Rules games. But, as you say, thank god for Netflix, DVDs and some good books! Maybe more cruising on the Kawasaki, too. Page two is on it’s way so goodnight all! Stay safe.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Good night Geof, sweet dreams my friend!
