Match Thread – Will Spurs Be Ole-ing After Difficult United Clash

|

With small and subtle improvements in Tottenham Hotspur’s performance against dogged and resilient Burnley in our midweek EFL Cup victory, simply put, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will have to be a hell of a lot better as we go up against Manchester United on Saturday.

Welcoming under fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to White Hart Lane is going to be no easy task at all given the form we are in and unfortunately for us, the fact they are on a run of four without a win means we can expect some kind of reaction from them. If we click again like we did at the very beginning of the campaign, defend well and be clinical (albeit not quite flowing) in attack, we can get back to winning ways here, but that’s easier said than done.

Perform as we have done in some matches this year, and if they give Ole a response, this one could be quite painful.

Jurgen or Scotty would do. but now! next month is too late. I don’t want us relegated and that’s the way we’re playing now. HK should go to a beach for a month. He’s not worth playing until he gets himself together. on a beach with a spiff in the mouth. take Nuno with you, harry. I’ll provide the house on a beach and a bags of spliffs. Jurgen through next Mayn and then bring in Scotty. it could not be worse than the way things are now. i’d let Bryan Gil be player-manager right about now.

but seriously, I’d take Jurgen for the rest of the season. This year’s place holder. We had a placeholder manager last season. Jurgen for now.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Graham Potter but if we can’t get him I wouldn’t be averse to giving Thomas Frank a shot.

  • Allan says:

Why are we surprised at the result ?
As fans we can see the direction Levy has taken the club . He says he wants to make the club great but what does he do to make this happen ? Please supporters of Levy in your thousands explain how he and ENIC have taken the playing side forward in how many years ?
Very few respected managers wish to manage here because of him
Cheap imports and our record buy is on the bench !!
    What a bloody shambles

  • Niall D says:

This is the the same fixture where this time last season, we put 6 past em. Remember those halcion days.
Whilst during the game we didn’t look much worse than Man U and similarly W/Ham, unfortunately on both occasions we ended up getting beaten.
That’s my current issue, win lose or draw, we always look either no better, or worse than our opponents.
We aren’t dominating games or putting weak teams to the sword.
I’ll say nothing about Harry, as it might offend.

    • PompeyYid says:

Niall, if by saying Harry you mean H Kate, you will not offend me, he is helping to bring us down, playing with 10men when he is in the side, get rid!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Allan…..love ’em or hate ’em, we reached the final of europe’s most prestigious club competition under ENIC, that’s better than we did under the previous two encumbents at least so you have to say there has been some improvement under their ownership, we just haven’t maintained it.

  • wentworth says:

It really is a case of nuno nothing (with apologies to Manuel). I really feel very sorry for him. Team selection let him down badly and we do not have any subs of worth.
Nuno is an honourable guy but his face shows he is completely out of his depth and short of ideas. He would be better resigning, leaving with dignity and taking a break in Portugal. Then we could “see” the faceless Levy thrutching around for a temporary replacement again.

I am surprised there are not many critics of Levy. He seems to get away with murder on his fat salary. When Nuno goes, Levy cannot be trusted to make a decent replacement. Mind you…who would want to inherit this lot. Even Son looks as though he’s had enough.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

So predictable! Ronaldo turns it on against us while our performance is a complete turn off with the now familiar slow buildup, ending up either with fiddling passes on the wings with a cross into a packed defence or central midfield lobs into a packed defence. Few bodies in the penalty area and few runs to make space for a pass, particularly from Kane who could have been subbed with son moving into his position.. I think Son is wasted on the wing. All compounded by poor substitutions, When they were made Moura’s one producing a full one minute of booing particularly as he was replaced with the off form Bergwijn and later another substitution bringing on the off form Dele when out attack was crying out for more width on the left which Regulion could have provided. Nothing in our play indicated lessons learnt from poor previous displays and our chronic inability to score goals. There is definitely something rotten in the state of White Hart Lane and while some individual players must take responsibility I think the buck stops with Nuno.for bad subbing and not addressing our obvious attacking deficiencies.

  • TK says:

The play stunk up the stadiums before Nuno arrived. And it continues to stink after his arrival. Nuno is not the problem, but he also surely is not the solution either. Where can we place the blame for the problem? Either with ENIC or, more classically, with the stars. I don’t mean the stars in the modern sense of Hollywood stars or stars like Messi and CR7, but the stars up there in the Milky Way. We need a soltuion that is part Venus and part Mars and part Pochie Man.

In a more realist take on the matter, the problem is with the modern corrupt capitalist system. It’s the same problem that is destroying the climate and the environment and producing Bezos and Boris Brexit Bozos thinking that they and makers of self driving cars will save us by moving the mess to space stations positioned between the moon and mars. The problem, mates, is in the stars.

In the meantimes, I’ll accept the temporary replacement of Nuno with Jürgen or Scottie. At least they know that football is played on a pitch here on Mother Earth.

The world is gone mad. Let me suggest Greta Thunberg to manage the new stadium while Jürgen mamages on the pitch. Or Scottie. I’d be happy with the three of them.

As to Harry: let him come spend a few months on my Brazilian beach with some big round spliffs. The word he needs to learn is “maconha.”

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hojbjerg’s post match interview was quite telling without saying too much. He said the performance from the players wasn’t acceptable then after a pause said “I had better not say too much”. Says to me the dynamic in the dressing room isn’t what it should be.

  • TK says:

The dynamic in the dressing room isn’t what it should be. That’s as understated as one could make it, TQ. The situation in the dressing room must be mirroring the dynamic on the pitch. We are at a nadir, the lowest point in the pantheon of stars.

Nuno had a career. HK had a career. Dashed. Smashed. Trashed. Never to be quite the same. A sotted blot, a soiled spot, a rot, and not

what is once was dreamed to be.

Do you think, gentlemen, that Jürgen would still be interested? Does he still have the courage to come?

  • DrDrums11 says:

I believe Enic and Levy were lucky to inherit a young hungry team, new players like Kane, Dele (at the time) combining w the likes of Dembele. I believe they got fortunate to get a good situation and once they arrived at the point (getting into Champions League) of making further moves to expand the success they completely and utterly failed. Levy figured to be content getting into the top six and generally left well enough alone. He has no ambition to have Spurs become the best Premiership club. He’s pushed his luck w Kane keeping us up top w his goal scoring abilities but now the time has run out. They’ve used Spurs to make as much profit as possible w the least amount of investment they could muster. And then in the rare occasions when they spent some money they bring in slow and unambitious guys like NDombele. It would great if they were to sell the club to someone who actually cares about winning vs just making profit.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

There was one good thing about today’s match…..it was the best rendering of The Last Post I have heard in a long time. Do you think it may have been prophetic regarding Nuno as well as a tribute to those who fell in wars?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

DrDrums…….Levy might pay himself well but I would guess it’s not too much different to bosses of similar size companies. I really don’t think they ‘trouser’ the profits as you suggest, I believe they do get re-invested whether it be in players or on the infrastructure but that’s another debate. The sort of owners some want are those that circumvent FFP to pour millions of their own money into player purchases and wages which the clubs cannot sustain by commercial activity as it should be.

  • DrDrums11 says:

TQ, yes I’d like to see some personal money going into player acquisition. Enough to pull in some better quality players. I’m not suggesting going completely crazy as to cause financial problems but at least some to raise our ability. More resources could also surely go into youth scouting as the best we have to show in this department in the last few years is Oliver Skipp. Enic has a lot of cash and it would be nice for them to throw some down for once.

  • Niall D says:

Believe it or not, I feel we do have 11 or so very good players at Tottenham.
Part of the issue is that we don’t have another 6 or so to step up.
Also the attitude of many of, what should be our senior players, actually needs examinining.
Can they not see themselves that they lack ideas, passion, speed, impetus, skill.
They now constantly play a pedestrian, side to side game which let’s the opposition get back into shape, we drop back too often and don’t put pressure on the ball early enough.
No one has the cahoonas to actually attempt a shot at goal.
We had 10 corners today yes 10 and nothing, even from one of them on target, Fek but they’re a sad bunch.
Today’s first goal, many blamed Davies for poor marking, and indeed this may be true, but earlier in the build up, he who cannot be criticised, didn’t even attempt to tackle the defender who set up the initial play.
Many of our team are going through the motions.
As TK said Nuno is not the solution, unfortunately where I disagree, he actually now is part of the problem, as it is his job to somehow get this band, I won’t even call them a team, playing together like they mean it, like they want to win, like they enjoy it.
Nuno appears to be making the wrong selections for games and during games he isn’t bringing the right personnel on at the right time. He does look a bit lost and clueless, as WW (I think) said nice enough guy, but for me out of his depth.
A few acquisitions, if they would come, could put us on the right track, another striker, a playmaker, another CD and sadly a new manager.
I thought we had gotten rid of 4 of the not so magnificent 7 but sadly more have taken their place.

  • Love totty says:

Actually I was sorry to see Lamela leave. He had passion and workrate, now so sorely lacking. Our defenders are not that bad at defending but not so good pressing up and playing forward. Toby could hit a pass. Hojbjerg and Skippy the same, ok covering but slow, which makes it hard for the wing backs to get forward and make combinations. Sonny and Lucas have energy but have too much to do. As Southgate showed, a non scoring Kane is just a liability.

  • wentworth says:

Has that extra hours sleep brought on any positive thoughts.

Nope. I have been thinking about players that are not up to the job. Obvious ones….Winks and Davies. Despite being internationals, both offer very, very little other than consistently mediocre.
What about those that are underperforming? Bergwijn…one goal wonder or bad transfer. Lo Celso…one legged wonder and shuffler. Dier…a mistake waiting to happen. Dele…once our wonder boy and now a shadow. Kane…our darling boy, Mr Spurs, now appearing to be sulky and frustrated.
The manager/coach. We were prepared to give him a chance as there was no one else at the time. How long will he last clutching the poison chalice? Unable to set up a plan. Unable to motivate. Unable to work out team selection and substitutions. (What a farce yesterday…Lucas got the highest player rating and he brings on the hapless Bergwijn). Nuno, nice guy but sad and totally out of his depth with this mediocre squad of players.
Our faceless chairman. Mr Levy. Has anyone seen him recently? Why should Nuno take all the blame? What or who were the boos about yesterday?
Young players both academy and signed. Where are they? Jack Clarke and Ryan Sessegnon stars of the future have succumbed to the Spursy disease of disappearing into obscurity after bright futures.
Will we ever return to the heady heights of regular top 4 position? We might not have won a decent trophy but it was a thrilling ride and I looked forward to every game. Now we have to put up with no shots on target yet again. Unbelievable.

  • 123spurs says:

We always struggle in final 3rd, boring predictable, not enough players in the box etc

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Rather odd for Nuno to come out and say the club are not concentrating on our league position so early in the season. So when are we going to? You can’t ignore it for the first 3 or 4 months by which time you can be out of the title race/top 4 finish or even be in or around the relegation places.

  • 123spurs says:

It simple as right now you just can’t see nuno turning this around they is no sign of any progression and the situation with kane etc, look at helpless arsenal with arteta to me it seems he has at least a plan, spurs on other hand are lost. How can so many players play so badly at the same time, maybe that just seems to be the trend, the club needs a huge mentality change.
