Match Thread – Will Everton Leave Spurs Feeling Blue

|

After three defeats on the spin, Tottenham Hotspur got their proverbial butts back on the horse with a Harry Kane inspired victory over West Bromwich Albion in our last match and now it’s all eyes to the FA Cup once again as we face Everton in the fifth round on Wednesday evening.

It might not have been a classic performance, but we were more on the front foot again for most of the 90 minutes and we did look better for it, but given the quality of the opposition it’s unlikely to have changed any opinions about manager Jose Mourinho.

The FA Cup is the FA Cup though and with Premier League form wobbling, it undoubtedly remains one of the best chances we have for silverware in the 2020/21 campaign as even the most optimistic Spurs fan probably has to accept with a 14 point gap to top spot, we aren’t challenging for the title anymore.

With a game in hand and a point better off than we are, Everton will be a tough cookie to crack though, and we are going to need to be better than we have been in recent weeks if we want to progress. With some rotation expected, the team selection could be absolutely key to this one.

I think I’ll take up my usual position, hiding behind the settee.

Everton

Win

Lose

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Somebody should teach him shooting technique, he had a shot from the middle of the D and almost hit the corner flag!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    It wasn’t to be…

But you know what, I’m not that concerned…… We went for and lost by the 1 goal. Better than not going for it and maybe still losing by the 1 goal to nil…….

  • Niall D says:

Great game, classic, probably the best game of football by two teams this season (IMO).
I Thought we were the better team, they had a decent 5 – 10 minutes in the first half.
I thought over all we were the better team, with more chances from open play, perhaps their keepers performance made the difference in the first half.
Anyhoo, we lost really good performance, wish all the best to Everton.

  • Love totty says:

You can understand why Jose is cautious as we can’t defend for toffee, no pun intended. We lost any cohesion once Lamela went off. He was great again.

    • Ossie says:

I think we just ran outta steam.after giving so much, also the subs didn’t help the way we was playing earlier, I’m disappointed as we didn’t deserve to lose but I enjoyed the performance and can only hope we play like this again.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

MOTD just put up City stats, 15 straight wins with 10 clean sheets, doesn’t give our now knackered players much hope for Saturday.

  • Spurfect One says:

This game highlighted for me the disparity of some of our players in certain positions, For instance, tonight we sub off Ndombele for Winks, there is a massive gulf in class between the two, the same can be said this season between Aurier and Doherty and Regulion and Davies. Until we have real quality all around the squad, we will always flatter to deceive.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

LT……if only he could play more than a couple of games without picking up an injury. Just shows that it’s a quality creative player that we desperately need.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

We can still compete well with City…

But we will definitely need to defend much better…….. And I’m sure we will.

  • TK says:

I’d rather watch a loss after play like this than a putrid scoreless draw. This was a match worth watching.

  • TK says:

I agree with the opinion you expressed at 10:56, Niall.

  • Marky says:

Same here I can take losing a game that we tried to win rather than what we’ve been seeing lately

  • Hot Tottingham says:

We didn’t lose this match because of Winks.

And, we did actually concede more goals with Ndombele and Lamela still on the pitch…

    But I don’t blame them either……

We left ourselves vulnerable to Everton’s impressive front players and we lost it in our defence. But it was the midfield area that we gave it up to them too easily, in our efforts to all out attack them.

But, if we had parked the bus, I was convinced they would easily beat us anyway………..

Swings and roundabouts, is the cllche to use, I think!

  • TK says:

Let it be known that Spurs supporters do not, and will not, support any bus parking, bore them to death, ways of playing on the pitch. We demand that our team play football as it is meant to be played. I’m happy with today’s match even though we lost. It was movement in the right direction.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I think we suffered from some poor refereeing decisions as well, it shouldn’t have been a pen because the contact came from DCL running across Hojbjerg and clipping his leg. We should have had a pen ourselves because there was a definite movement of Davies arm towards the ball from our free kick.

  • 123spurs says:

and this is again why we will never win anything. and spurs will be the 1st club jose will not win a trophy…mentality, concentration, focus, dealing with pressure, common sense has to be built into the players, no matter what level or standard. we gifted them to many goals.

  • 123spurs says:

TK if you are happy with that result because we attacked and it was better then a 1nil loss….you need to wake up. you need to have a balance. it aint all about attacking and pot luck who scores more, you cant roll all the eggs in one basket, has to be a balance and a time and a place, jose needs to get this right, it can be done….

    • TK says:

lol. I’m simply happy to see our lads doing something other than passing the ball backwards or off the pitch. they actually were playing football. I’m wide awake as I say this, thank you. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’ve been bored senseless watching Spurs lose or draw for so much of this season. And when playing much less talented or, even equal teams to Everton.

And, I’ve often been bored senseless in watching Spurs win.

There’s no way should we be conceding 5 goals. But I honestly don’t care… For once I enjoyed some unpredictable and exciting football for an effing change!

    Now… Let’s beat City 5-4!

I know… that ain’t gonna happen! But it would be something, wouldn’t it?!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

You know what 123…… I can’t say I’m at all happy that we lost. But I really enjoyed watching us try our very best to win… For a change.

  • wentworth says:

Cracking cup tie with lots of positives. Just wish we had decent wing backs…. Doherty and Davies are very poor. Also Winks adds nothing. Disappointed with Dele. Used to rate his play but he now seems disinterested…has the stuffing been knocked out of him. Really pleased for Sanchez goals and a steady game. Hojbjerg gave everything as usual…so unlucky with the pen. Harry could have had a hat trick on another night. Shame. We deserved more.

  • Niall D says:

    Spurfect
    Agree 100 %.
