Match Thread – Will Everton Leave Spurs Feeling Blue

|

After three defeats on the spin, Tottenham Hotspur got their proverbial butts back on the horse with a Harry Kane inspired victory over West Bromwich Albion in our last match and now it’s all eyes to the FA Cup once again as we face Everton in the fifth round on Wednesday evening.

It might not have been a classic performance, but we were more on the front foot again for most of the 90 minutes and we did look better for it, but given the quality of the opposition it’s unlikely to have changed any opinions about manager Jose Mourinho.

The FA Cup is the FA Cup though and with Premier League form wobbling, it undoubtedly remains one of the best chances we have for silverware in the 2020/21 campaign as even the most optimistic Spurs fan probably has to accept with a 14 point gap to top spot, we aren’t challenging for the title anymore.

With a game in hand and a point better off than we are, Everton will be a tough cookie to crack though, and we are going to need to be better than we have been in recent weeks if we want to progress. With some rotation expected, the team selection could be absolutely key to this one.

I think I’ll take up my usual position, hiding behind the settee.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

I agree that RB is a mess for us. Aurier is a disaster waiting to happen, and that was the case before JM. Indeed, he may be a bit better in some ways under JM than he was before. But he remains a disaster waiting to happen at any minute. Doherty has not impressed positively in any of the matches I’ve watched. Not sure who’s responsible for that. Kicked in the head by a tinker’s donkey? (My father was Irish whose roots were traceable back to iron mongers.) Was surprised when we signed him. He’s almost 30, and DL cannot expect to gain money on the resale.

Regards DOH’s history, all I know is that he did a good wing-back job at Wolves, when we went for for him it was “couldn’t bite our finger’s quick enough” and except our bid, maybe the Wolves manager saw something that made it worth selling him to us, I just do not know. COYS

  • Niall D says:

Yep he appears to be one of the poor to average players we’ve got, I think HT even spoke about a poor performance from him for Ireland, so looks like he ain’t just doing it for us.
It may be first season nerves or as (I think TK said) that JM can enervate some players.
Most of us have crossed swords at some time here, by the next post it’s forgotten m8.
We both passionately support Spurs and have our own opinions.
    Roll on City COYS.

We seem to have forgotten that Doherty had covid positive test when with ireland squad, and he has not been the same since. Also the defensive tactical shape jose likes is not the way wolves played last season when i have seen them. Jose also berated him constantly in a recent game at whl when at LB then switched him to RB. so Doherty was on the same side as technical area. He has definitely lost confidence.

  • wentworth says:

Apparently, Mourinho has upset Bale with his snide comments. So that’s Dele, Aurier and Bale that have been targeted by Mourinho. It will be Doherty and Dier next. Remember Luke Shaw at Man Utd who was nearly destroyed by Mourinho and Paul Pogba who was also attacked. Not very impressed with the man management. Time for Levy to have a quiet word. We need the best from our players.

  • Allan says:

Whatever we think about Mourinho he appears to have improved certain players but by the same token appears not to have been able to improve or inspire others .
Whether this improvement in players is by public humiliation , quite words in training or any other means I don’t know but it appears not to work for all since he appears not to be able to get the side working as he would like .
Is he so set in his ways that he can’t mould the team into his philosophy or are many of the players not able or good enough to adapt ?
Surely an experienced manager is able to see the best in a player and work a system to suit ?
This is where a manager earns his corn by getting all players to produce their true potential .

  • 123spurs says:

True Allen, the manager is paid to do that, but you also have to play to the players strengths, jose always had an open cheque book where ever he managed, also he buys ready made players, he has no interest in youth, he had KDB and lukaku good young players. R3gards Doherty he done well for wolves in thsy formation etc seemed and upgrade on aurier but it hasn’t worked out. He is also an arsenal fan.

  • Niall D says:

Yep re Doh, don’t want to make it all about him, I did say about his COVID test a few weeks back
It could be anything from all of the above, first year nerves, Covid, JM, out of position or not good enough, either way it’s still an issue at RB. As is most of our defence, CBs desperately needed,
Will we get them over the summer?
    Will Mourinho still be there?
    If he isn’t then who?
Who put the Ram in the Ram a lam a ding dong?
Is it left or right foot in first in the Hokey Kokey?

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

At least we don’t have to play Citeh again in a cup game.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Apparently……Spurs are the same price to beat City as WBA are to beat United according to Paddypower.

  • PompeyYid says:

Some good posts here, the question on JM not being the Manager for today is probably correct, note I said today meaning modern times, It is just not allowed anymore to bollack or berate anyone, behind closed doors even, cos in these times, you get “oh you can’t say that to me I am going to have a cry lol!”, as always! in public it is so wrong, but JM has not moved with it, Sir AF could not be the manager he was today either, remember that style today is called “bullying” aw! poor things.

Even the arm round shoulder/father figure doesn’t seem work either, younger super over paid players, cannot be touched/upset, “cos we are worth so much more than you”, thus becoming untouchable, note even in the Military they are talking about dropping “Sir, yes Sir” cos it upsets todays millennials, what’s that all about.

It seems that todays manager has to get his coaching methods over by, talking as equals, at the players level etc, but can JM revert to this style…I do not think so! so an out dated/has-been.

But a good manager/coach will always get his thing over, and more importantly it will be adopted/used to suit the current crop of players he has, at the start anyhow, this option I do not think has been tried at Spurs under JM.

Maybe we need to find a go-ahead young manager/coach, who? I have no bloody idea,

Am bound to get some flack for this post, but this old fart lol! says bring it on. COYS

  • Allan says:

    PY
You are a cynic but love it !!!

    • PompeyYid says:

Allan you are so right, I am sick of the me me me me millennial PC Snowflake generation world we live in now, and I think a whole load of footballers are in that world also, along with many fans. COYS

  • 123spurs says:

    Agree PY totally

  • TK says:

Note to JM, a North American sayng: you can catch more bear with honey than with vinegar. Alienation is not a good man-management tactic. I would be motivated by such treatment, but in the wrong direction. If a manager was trying to humiliate me, I’d be likely to motivate the team to move me to another club.

Respect for our common humanity is better than humiliation. I’m sad that humiliation is now a managerial tactic at Spurs. We saw the same an Manure with Shaw and Pogba as was noted by wentworth. I cringe to see this at Spurs.

  • TK says:

Not that humiliation cannot have its occasional successes. but it’s not the way to live. and I don’t want it to be the Spurs way.

I’ve had a commitment to Spurs for decades and will have this commitment as long as i’m breathing and alert. JM has NO commitment to Spurs. None. Never has had and never will. His commitment is only to JM, and he thinks that JM is the sole special one worthy of respect or support. His way or the highway. I’d give him a one-way ticket to the highway. Go and don’t look back, JM.

  • TK says:

The most recent quote from JM: “”Since the beginning of the season, in relation to everything I try to be very private and keep everything indoors.” WTF? Anyone who has not been in a como can recognize that this is BS. (Not Begian Spur, but that more traditional use of the letters BS). very private and keep everything indoors? LOL.

    • PompeyYid says:

TK, so true regards privacy lol!

Regards the como, you are correct, its Perry, thus everyone is pissed. lol! COYs

  • TK says:

    in a coma… lol sorry

  • BelgianSpur says:

Niall – Regarding Doherty, and plenty of others – it’s obviously far easier to blame the manager as a go-to excuse, despite the fact that most of the players listed have serious question marks about them under several managers.

But that’s obviously not going to suit the narrative of certain posters, who will just accept the far more simplistic view that JM is the root of all of our problems and that sacking him will make everything better.

I wonder how long they’ll take to turn on the next manager, once that person fails to get results with this group of players.
