Match Thread – VAR Needs To Be Pensioned Off & Spurs Will Be Hoping To Do Just That To Chelsea

|

I’m pretty sure what can be said about the Video Assistant Referee (lack of) technology from a Tottenham Hotspur point of view will have been aired on Sunday evening and throughout Monday, but it’s time for us to quickly move on to Chelsea on Tuesday evening in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Having received a bye against Leyton Orient, that little break clearly helped us against Shkendija and Newcastle when it came to the more ‘Spurs like’ attacking performances we saw, but as we all know, we did not get our just deserts against Steve Bruce’s side.

We cannot make that mistake again against Chelsea as they more than have the quality to punish us, so whilst we can be optimistic we will create chances – they have to be taken and Newcastle is the lesson.

Our chances aren’t improved by an injured Son Heung-Min but we have to hope that is the last blow to come from the weekend’s action – Tuesday night, fresh game, fresh opportunity and let’s all hope it’s a fresh win to put Sunday’s nightmare well and truly behind us.

Chelsea...

Morning TQ – yes got my Portuguese Sky set up in the living room and that’s about it (although now had it for some 15 years and when it rains bloody goes haywire with interruptions, etc LOL – so probably going to have to replace the system this Autumn almost certainly) – still got an old Sky receiver (from yester year full subscription) also for digital UK, etc – with Sport TV pick up every UK game based on Sky, BT, even Amazon, etc and even a few extra like last season that Man City game was also live even though nobody was showing in the UK at all, etc – bloody quality – especially now with JM – meaning every and I do mean every single Spurs game is always live – WICKED LOL!

The only thing is they lost the rights to the CL 2 years ago and also Spanish footy – even though I’m half Spanish – no real interest in Spanish footy after the great demise of my super Depor (the Spanish Leeds unfortunately – maybe we can rise back up like they have now but not holding my breath) but irks 100% regarding CL (think I’ve got to pay an extra 10 Euros a month for Eleven Sports but not bothered setting it up so far – currently paying just over 40 Euros a month for Portuguese Sky overall)!

As we’re in EL – which Sport TV still fully covers and means I can as I said above watch all our games in that too, etc as well as Prem, FA and Carabao (yes we’re still in that after last night LOL) no rush for now as regards getting Eleven Sports for CL!

Respect to Dier for last night – I was 1 who criticised him lately but always said including yesterday that hoped he would still prove me wrong and worst case still had his place in the 1ST team squad for sure!

Going to do some reading on NewsNow to catch up with what’s going on – will be back later.

Geof – hi mate – look forward to this article then LOL – keep well matey!

PY …. Your post struck a chord. You sound like me in regard to a mobile. I have one. I rarely take it anywhere or use it. People gave up trying to contact me on it years ago. They ring the house phone. I’ve always hated the idea that anyone can contact me at any time and I have to feel obligated to deal with it. The only time I carry it with me is when I go for longer rides on my motorbike, just in case. I won’t even have to do that now because my 18 yr old daughter has just got her own motorbike and she always has her mobile with her. Technology has passed me by …. and I don’t care!

Geof, am with you there, but I have to take mine out with me, carry it everywhere, incase something goes wrong at home with Mrs PY, when am out its my free time, but the wifes carer may have to contact me in emergencies, safety first. COYS

    PY /Geoff
I’m nearly the same re-tech. No youngsters to help. My mobile is switched on for about an hour each day to catch up on messages or if I’m out and MrsD needs something, that’s it. I can’t even do Emojis on this thread. Fek.
    Glad to see DH back.
We weren’t great 1st half but enjoyed the 2nd where we were better.
PY I agree this seems to be a tactic by JM to be cautious against “better” teams taken from the Fergie book of tactics.
It wasn’t a bad tactic for either of them. I’ll have a bit of that.

Hi Niall, quick lesson for you so you don’t have to miss out and can use emoji’s on here.

For a smiley face type the following characters: colon, hyphen right bracket as follows but without the spacing : – )

For a wink do the same but start with a semi-colon as follows, again without spacing ; – )

For a frown do the same as smiley but end with a left bracket as follows : – (

Join in and give it a go! 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

HT …. It’s funny you should say that because as I was replying to you I had the same thought, that I already knew the result before I watched it. What if I hadn’t known? My take on the game might well have been different. It’s a good point.

Hot Tottingham – There is a major distinction between a striker and a centre forward, which is why genuine centre forwards are rare and expensive. A centre forward has to be able to play with his back to goal and play other players in as well as score goals. I could have talked about Kane and Lewandowski but Firminho made the point better because he’s not his team’s main goalscorer. But he plays because of the way he links the attacking play. You can contrast it with Erling Haland, great goal scorer and physically imposing but hold up play non existent so not a true centre forward. He’s only 20 though and already you can see the Dortmund coaches trying to develop that side of his game because it would make him an even better player. You can play without a centre forward if you have a Vardy type striker and just hit it over the top. We’ve tried that with Son. It works if the opposition attacks and leaves space to run into, not if they defend their third in depth.

Jod, I do understand the distinction between the two roles. What I’m saying is that that distinction has become somewhat blurred in recent times. And that often the roles are intertwined. Not for all ‘strikers’ but definitely for many modern players that are still called ‘centre forwards’. As with Harry Kane. But even Harry has said that he chose his No. 10 shirt because he sees himself more so as a 10, following on from two of his Spurs idols, Keane and Sheringham. And when we say No. 10 in the traditional use of the term; it usually means a support striker to the CF. And he effectively is both. As we saw with his 4 assists for Son vs the Saints. He was more playmaker than striker even, on that day…

Which may go a long way to explain why Spurs have difficulty in finding a suitable, direct back-up for him. And why many potential back-ups have chosen not to come to the club as his back-up. It’s a tough role to compete with if the player wants regular game-time. Not unless he can cover right across the front and also be a good target man as well….. It’s why we don’t seem to have a problem with buying attackers but have difficulty in getting in a straight up CF, come target man… Harry fulfils many roles in one. And no CF can compete with him in this, and they all know it. Anyone that does come in is then open to a lot of stick and even abuse from Spurs supporters. Because we have been spoilt. Or, they just don’t get the value of maybe a CF/target man, that (unlike Harry) doesn’t also score a lot of goals. Llorente, for example. ……………

It’s like players such as Son and Lucas (for another example) with old-named footballing positions in the modern game. They are often still called wingers . But they don’t hug touchlines like a traditional winger would. They will more often or not, cut inside or make inside runs from deep. And play like another old football termed position, inside-forwards… They will also play more centrally when needed. And like Harry (even if he is seen as a CF), the likes of Son and Lucas are also seen to come deep into the midfield areas. And even to defend…

These old traditional terms for footballers can bring confusion, when in the modern game, the modern footballer is expected to fulfil more diverse roles than was ever the case, when I were a wee lad….. Even Goalkeepers are expected to be good with the ball at their feet and CD’s are often expected to defend the wings as well as being long ball play-makers or, more like a deep lying midfielder. And, last night we saw Reguilon and Aurier mostly defending as full-backs in the first half, but playing more like traditional wingers in the second half. A fine example was when Aurier crossed from his wing to find Reguilon at the far post, attempting a header on goal… With the forwards looking on.

So, when is a CF not a CF? When his name is Harry Kane 😉
