Match Thread – VAR Needs To Be Pensioned Off & Spurs Will Be Hoping To Do Just That To Chelsea

|

I’m pretty sure what can be said about the Video Assistant Referee (lack of) technology from a Tottenham Hotspur point of view will have been aired on Sunday evening and throughout Monday, but it’s time for us to quickly move on to Chelsea on Tuesday evening in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Having received a bye against Leyton Orient, that little break clearly helped us against Shkendija and Newcastle when it came to the more ‘Spurs like’ attacking performances we saw, but as we all know, we did not get our just deserts against Steve Bruce’s side.

We cannot make that mistake again against Chelsea as they more than have the quality to punish us, so whilst we can be optimistic we will create chances – they have to be taken and Newcastle is the lesson.

Our chances aren’t improved by an injured Son Heung-Min but we have to hope that is the last blow to come from the weekend’s action – Tuesday night, fresh game, fresh opportunity and let’s all hope it’s a fresh win to put Sunday’s nightmare well and truly behind us.

Chelsea...

Great point TQ – sounds good to me LOL!

Shame we can’t watch that match as we’ll be busy watching our EL decider I believe – watched last night most of it – pretty good game as is usually the case between them ………!

Man City clearly the team to beat here and our main rival to winning this overall (because of their great squad depth obviously – not that we’re doing too. too badly on this judging by tonight, etc LOL) – Liverpool tend to play a weakened side and no real reason to fear anyone else even Man Yoo/Arse, etc – not when we can field a full strength side eventually and fully fit and fully cohesive also – especially one hopes come late December and onwards – IMHO of course!

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. I can’t understand why you seem so happy? We haven’t bought King yet …. so it’s all doom and gloom.

  • Niall D says:

    Brilliant result.
Real cup tie 2nd half, the guys dug deep. Looks like we”re getting a bit of team spirit back.
I’m just waiting for DH’s Jose out comment lol.

Geof – beating that scummy lot is always a special occasion for me (especially living in Fulham and what I was put through at school for being a Spurs fan in deep Chelskia territory) – chuffed for JM also finally getting 1 over on FL after last season – remember how he celebrated at the end of our match in December at the THS for example, etc – just bloody desserts at last LOL!

We’re through to the QF in Xmas week no less, Sonny and Bale are back after the international break hopefully, no injuries tonight also and with only 5 days to to the window shutting – fully expecting a 2nd STR/CF through the door FINALLY and hopefully a (L)CB also – Skriniar hopefully, (although also hearing that Umtiti is available – 2 problems there though – injuries and his wages even if Barca can be reasoned with favourably on a transfer fee) – it’s all starting to look a lot more positive – so why shouldn’t I be happy mate LOL?!

Remember a few weeks ago we both agreed that patience was needed and we were in the middle of a re-build, etc – then suddenly we buy Reguilon and get Bale back and now are after Skriniar, etc and suddenly the bar gets raised very high again and very quickly also – and then after tonight got to be happy with helping to recover from that sucker punch late on Sunday – chin up mate LOL!

Well that went to plan, let them run there little hearts out and get nowhere, approx 75% possession, ok 3 chances, 1 goal, 2 mistakes by Tangy n Reggie, we have approx 25% possession and 2 chances, in the 1st half.

Come out in the 2nd, they are confident, 1 nil up, we hit em hard, give em no breathing space, in their faces, move the ball a hell of a lot faster blah blah, bring on Hoj secure the centre ground, bring on target man and fresh legs, their weak defence starts to show holes, equaliser yippee.

Penalty shoot out, our first 5 take pens with confidence, their first 4 ditto, last man bottling it, Mr post saves it, we win 5-4, bye bye Chavs now on to the next round.

That 2nd half performance showed to me there is nothing wrong in that team or squad, another CB and a striker will only make us even better, oh wait a min a certain Gareth Bale hasn’t played yet.

What’s that now played 6….won 4, drawn 1, lost 1, not bad for a team with a has-been coach, who in his interview was a wee bit chuffed, and that might be an understatement, so well played lads and JM.

Now its on to Thursday and another Yid team from the home land. COYS

If you have Foxtel, Geoff, it was live on bein2. All Carabao cup games are on there.

  • Geofspurs says:

Hi Ekk …. I can watch the game on beIN 2 in 45 minutes time, but i don’t think it was live. Pity I know the result!!

  • Geofspurs says:

EJ …. You might enjoy an article I’ll put up when there’s a few quiet days …. maybe the International break.

  • Ekkaboy says:

I am in Melbourne Geoff and would be using the same satellite as you. And it was on bein2 at 4-40am. I recorded it and watched it when I got up

  • Ekkaboy says:

I am in Melbourne Geoff and I am sure we use the same Foxtel satellite. It was on bein2 live at 4-40am here. I recorded it and watched it this morning.

I understand our ‘not good enough’ centre back was named man of the match? Must have been a close call over Ndombele. Reguilon looked good after a nervy start. Bergwijn looked short of fitness to me, he was shown to be struggling for breath after one short sprint, seems to be carrying a little extra timber.

  • Geofspurs says:

EKK …. Thanks for that. I’ll check it out for the next round.

  • Geofspurs says:

Having watched the game, from the comments I read on here I expected us to be bombarded with shots through the first half. In fact Chelsea’s penetration and goal attempts were minimal due to some excellent defending. In the second half we showed much more enterprise going forward than Chelsea did in the first half. This was a really well worked result.

    • PompeyYid says:

Geofspurs….spot on there with your observations, Chavs had 3 real chances, 2 of those we gave them, as in Tangy in Reggie errors, both made up for their errors in the rest of the game.

It seems “oh hated one” Dier got MOM, fair play, but for me it was Lamela for his never going to stop, keeping them busy, causing trouble all the time, he has a brilliant attitude, looks proud of the shirt he wears and I think inside of him is a bad loser screaming to get out lol! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’m not sure how you got that idea Geof. There were just 3 or 4 posts at half time. In one of my two posts I said that bar their goal, Hugo wasn’t troubled.

I loved the second half and it was an exciting game in the end. But I can’t see it in anyway being a well planned victory as PY suggested, or a well worked result as you have put it Geof.

We were 1-0 down from the 19th minute and didn’t equalise until the 83rd minute. We then won on a penalty shoot-out that was taken to sudden death…

If that was the plan , then Jose is not just the special one, he’s God! 😉

  • PompeyYid says:

HT….tongue in cheek post by me, jesus we are taking things wrong on here, nevermind eh! we won.

In your earlier post you asked where everybody was lol! I am sorry I for one do not post during the game, because my posts come from a Laptop, upstairs, and have absolutely no idea how to use my mob lol! not that I want to learn lol!

Keep getting excited everyone the future looks bright and maybe there is a trophy this season on the horizon. COYS

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

JOSE OUT. The first half showed just why I want Jose out. Absolutely no game plan. No attacking intent and passive in defence. it was truly appalling. I hope he has learnt his lesson from the second half performance, full of intent and aggression with no little skill.
Let’s see what happens against Man U. I expect it will be another negative performance hoping to eek out a point instead of taking the game to the opposition which is what we should be doing if we have any intention of competing with the big teams.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

I have to agree with that DH. (Not Jose out)… But in the 1st half we were awful…

Still, I was confident that we could turn it around… I really didn’t think that at just 1-0 down that Jose and the players wouldn’t put up a second half fight and then go for the win….

Thankfully that is exactly what happened. Because if we had carried on as we did in the 1st 45, I might have been calling for Jose’s head too…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Hi PY… I did realise that… My post wasn’t 100% serious myself….. I did enjoy the game… And I certainly celebrated the result.

My complaint wasn’t about any of us regular posters on here. Not even the ones that regularly complain. I was more talking about the ones that surface only when we lose. Which I find odd. Because they always disappear when we win… In other words, since the Everton game we haven’t lost, and those posters haven’t posted since that loss….. Oh well…

I generally don’t post during the match although I used to, back when….. Last night I felt like some company….. And I was just a wee bit drunk! 🙂

At least I didn’t start calling up ex-lovers and getting all needy and sentimental in the middle of the night… Always a mistake……

    • PompeyYid says:

HT…HaHa just a wee bit drunk, ditto in about 20mins, lol! as you know I care for the missus, well 4 glasses of red wine last night in them 20mins, loved it, Spurs fault, the missus was taking the piss bless her, really am a naughty boy.

I also new you were talking, regards the moaning, whinging only visit when we lose poster’s 100% with you there mate, not like the very many die-hards eh! COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

Hi HT …. I think it was well worked because we started by defending and relied on quick breaks …. which is JMs style. The trouble in the first half was that we defended well, despite conceding a goal, but were unable to enjoy any quick breaks. That changed in the second half. The fact that we won on penalties was brilliant as it will give the team more confidence the next time penalties are required. I think the last two games has set the scene for JM’s future …. he will attack teams like Newcastle, and play more defensively against top opposition.
Or maybe not. I don’t really know. But not knowing makes it more interesting!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

You know what you know Geof. And I always respect your opinion.

But you watched the game knowing the result . Watching it live was not at all fun in that 1st half… But as I pointed out to DH, I was confident that we could turn it around….. And we did!

  • Hot. Tottingham says:

And I’m sure it was a Jose plan to contain them early on and step it up later. But this to me is not the way I like it. It’s far too risky. And it was such a close call up to that Harry Kane winner and their penalty miss…..

But it was like a knock-out cup match against good opposition should be. Especially as that was a make shift Spurs team out there and with an exciting young debutant to boot…….

    Alls well that ends well…..
