Match Thread – Spurs To Set The Record Straight Against The Bubble Blowers

|

With only one Premier League victory in our last five, Tottenham Hotspur received a much needed boost on Thursday evening as we more than took advantage over OPellets Wolfsberger in our Europa League Round of 32 tie and this Sunday we renew acquaintances with bubble blowers West Ham United.

With Harry Kane rested in midweek, Son Heung-Min also got 45 minutes off and a number of players would’ve received a nice shot of confidence from getting on the scoresheet – but of course, Sunday’s midday kick off will be a different story and the Spammers are in reasonable form of their own, sitting six points ahead of us in the table. Admittedly we have a game in hand on them, but how they have scored more than we have does defy some belief.

We can start putting that situation right though, as there are no doubts whatsoever that if we perform as we know we can, we are more than capable of knocking them off the park.

But as ever, with Spurs this season, it’s down to whether or not we turn up.

lucas Moura: “We worked hard and we showed a good effort… It’s missing something… We need to improve.”

  • TK says:

    Well, duh

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

And of course no one mentions this 12 o clock kick off after the Euro match on Thursday.. Even most of those who did not play still had the travelling to do. But hey we’re Spurs supporters so we prefer to have a good moan rather than to take account of this and the other factors I have mentioned.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

So where did they find the energy to start playing from 60 minutes that they didn’t have at kick-off because of their EL exertions?

Stan….as supporters we all have a right to criticise a performance if we feel it is deserved, that doesn’t make us bad supporters, quite the opposite in fact, it’s because we are passionate about wanting our club to be successful while hopefully playing entertaining football.

      • Stan Rosenthal says:

Fair minded criticism that takes account of difficult circumstances and gives credit to what has been done right, yes. . The other kind, no.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Oh what a shame! The Arse lost and thus deprived you lot of having the pleasure of them being above us to add fuel to your bonfire for Jose.

  • 123spurs says:

    I’ve seen more clean sheets @ a 1 star 🌟 hotel

  • Allan says:

Block I think that there was a universal no to us borrowing Lingard on the site because he offered no improvement !!! However now he appears that he have been better than we have !!!! On recent performances by our team he might have been a good player to borrow ?

  • Niall D says:

Stan I did allude to our having played more games than anyone in the premiership about two threads ago. My personal gripe isn’t so much about JM, it’s about it all m8.
How can West ham pick up Dawson CDM on loan and Coufal (I think that’s right) CDM for 5 Mill yet we can’t see these players, we did spend some dosh, we knew Verts was going and Tobs was ageing, by this stage we also knew, that Dave wasn’t doing the business and bringing in Rodon wasn’t going to fill that gap, I do feel that the likes of myself, PY, HT and a few others have given JM a fair chance, when I look at where we were compared to Everton, W/Ham, Leicester, even ManU and at one stage Liverpool, I have watched them all progress and we have fallen away, A/villa bottom of the league last year now look at em. We should be miles ahead of these teams and right up there with Man C.
    But we ain’t.

  • TK says:

Our team is in desperate need of getting more talent and ability showing in their play. Drop N’dombele back into more central position and bring Dele into a true No. 10 position.. Put Bale on the front line with Son and Kane. Surely the results cannot be any worse than recent results. As to strengthening the CB position–we need new talent in the new year. But there are players with a history to suggest they can up the performance on the attacking end.

  • TK says:

Can you imagine a Spurs team that forgot “to dare is to do’? Not to dare definitely is not to do. Too much fear evident on the pitch.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Stan – Leicester also played on Thursday night, they had a far tougher match than us, they have been riddled with injuries and they did OK. But then they are a far better coached team than we are and they have players who believe in their manager. The only reason Jose hasn’t yet been sacked is the lack of an alternative manager at this time of the season. We will have to wait until May for his miserable tenure to come to an end.

    • Stan Rosenthal says:

Leicester had a later k.o. and Villa were without two key players, particularly Grealish. And if we have to wait until May before anything can be done about José, why go on and on and on and on….about him?

      • TK says:

And if we have to wait until May before anything can be done about José, why go on and on and on and on….about him?

the answer, stan, is that we want him gone yesterday. Because we care about the soul of our club. May is better than later than May, but February would be better.

      • TQ2Spurs says:

So what are you suggesting Stan, that we just say nothing until May even though we have 1 win and 5 losses in our last 6 PL games?

In his post match presser Jose said that he has the best coaches and the best coaching methods bar none, that’s clearly debatable, but even so there is more to managing a squad of players to get the best out of them than just coaching skills.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

That’s the trouble…..they daren’t for fear of getting the Jose treatment.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

DH…..Rodgers is rumoured to be our manager of choice to replace Jose, I’m not sure we would be able to tempt him away from Leicester though. Apparently we tried to get him in 2012.

  • Spurfect One says:

Why would Rodgers leave a team that is not only on an upward trajectory but also has a way better scouting system in place than we do, whilst having to come and fix a massive mess we are in at the moment, whilst leaving his current owners who want to push on to the maximum level they can, whilst ours are happy with just the top 4?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Spurfect, these are the kind of reasons why I suggested we probably wouldn’t be able to tempt him away. You are correct, our poor recruitment is one of the reasons we are where we are.

  • Geofspurs says:

So JM feels that our best chance of CL football is to win the Europa League. Do we really want to secure CL football just to get knocked out in the group stage and reduce our global standing even more? A lot needs to happen before we play with the big boys in the CL.

As for Sunday …. we played the worst WHU I’ve seen for some time. They were woeful. They had nothing. But they won 2-0. What does that say about us? To start any game with zero intensity in the PL (and how many times have we done that?) is to tell the opposition that they have don’t have to do too much to take the points. And if they can’t manage that on their own we will provide enough sloppy passes out of defence to assist them.

And why would anyone still be talking about Bale’s fitness. He’s been here for months. How long does it take? His last two games showed improvement so let’s see what he offers. Play him …. then we’ll know.

  • Geofspurs says:

Sorry …. should have said lost 2-1.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Geof… west ham are the best we have seen in years, as their league position shows. Spurs defence are making errors of schoolboy level, and that ref. has been official on the pitch at WHL Liverpool game I think? Gave a lot of decisions to liverpool as well. Spurs are in a bad luck run of missed chances, off woodwork and goalie saves. Just have to look at this game could have scored 4 goals another day. Bt players are not in harmony now with jose….

  • Niall D says:

Geoff I think you got it there, much like the game against Leicester they were woeful so were W/Ham,(twice) C/Palace, Fulham, N/Castle all games where we were the “better” team and each time we failed to win.
To Stan this is what I’m on about, this result on its own I could accept, but unfortunately it isn’t, it’s a catalogue, be it the nearly of the FA Cup against Everton, or the complete competulation against L/pool and Man C.
We have a weakness somewhere, my guess is in Central defence and GK, it needs fixed, then there’s RB then creative mid field. God help us when Harry and Sonny go at the end of the season.
    Think on it guys.
Phone call hey Harry /Sonny Poch here, I’ve already spoken to Hugo he’s coming in August, I think I can get Ericsson from Italy, Fancy getting the Band back together, Champions League, and French title guaranteed. Whaddyathink?

    • Geofspurs says:

Hi b108 … I honestly thought WHU were poor, especially after all the praise they’ve been getting lately. I expected them to come at us. It didn’t happen. They didn’t press and they enjoyed no period of dominant football. We lost because we were not intent on winning. That’s our recent problem … no intent.

    • Geofspurs says:

ND …. Then all he’ll need is Dembele!

  • BelgianSpur says:

TQ2Spurs – you started the thread by commenting that matchdays on VS were a lot quieter these days.

I won’t speak for others, but for me, results aside, VS just isn’t as enjoyable these days. At worst, it can be toxic, and at best, a majority of posters are just here to criticise JM regardless of what happens. Whether he is deserving of that blame or not is a discussion in itself, but if every thread turns into the same arguments over and over, it loses appeal, for me.

As far as the game itself, I feel we have again been undone by poor individual performances. Whether that is just an untimely bad run of form, JM’s failure to motivate players or an inherent lack of quality – we’ll all have our opinions and it’s probably a bit of all.

For example, I am not Eric Dier’s biggest fan but if JM has made him CB1, it’s probably because he is the best of a bad bunch. Don’t blame Dier for that. Blame the club’s management for failing to put together a squad with a decent CB in it.

As far as my opinion on JM, I still think his style of football can win games, but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that he needs time and money to build “his” team and play his way. Trying to get players to play his way, when they just aren’t suited for it, is looking more and more like a waste of time.

So the situation we find ourselves in, is it the players’ fault for not performing and having the mental resilience of a 4 year old (and saying that may be doing a disservice to certain 4 year olds)? JM’s fault for not being adaptive enough/too stubborn to change his ways, despite not having the players he needs to get his tactics to work? Levy’s fault for appointing JM all the while knowing that he was never going to spend what JM’s methods required? Probably all of the above.

I said there is no point sacking a manager mid season, and I said I would judge JM’s final performance after the season. I have now gotten to the stage where I think that I probably want JM to leave, even if we win the EFL Cup and the EL this year.

I can live with the results.

I can live with the sometimes dull football.

I just can’t stand the constant moaning (and/or infighting) from other Spurs fans anymore.

    • Ossie says:

BS I’ve seen worst on here when Harry was in charge, and results and the football were alot better, fans can find anything to fight over

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

BelgianSpur – I respect your opinion regarding the VS site but if you want to see real in fighting go to the Fighting Cock message board. That is truly toxic and frequently downright nasty. I have no idea what is going on in some peoples lives to make them behave like that. it is truly depressing. I find this site quite mild in comparison. Feelings are running high at the moment because the team are performing so badly but I don’t believe it is that bad.
I would say though it would be nice if everyone could respect other peoples opinions without resorting to petty insults – none of us are experts, we are just saying what we are seeing as loyal committed fans. COYS
