Match Thread – Spurs Target Three From Three With Watford Up Next

|

With an aggregate victory over Pacos de Ferreira in last night’s Europa Conference League clash, it turns Nuno Espirito Santo’s start to life at Tottenham Hotspur from good, to quite impressive.

Three wins from four as we head towards September, is no bad return, especially given the confusion and issues we have to deal with – although thankfully the future of Harry Kane is now off the table until at least next summer. Everyone hopes the squad is added to, a most have their preferences for who we move on to help cashflow, but for now, it’s all eyes to Watford.

It’s been a mixed start for the Vicarage Road outfit with a win and a defeat from their opening two ties, so arguably ‘form’ is in our favour for whatever that counts for at this early stage of the season, but the return of Kane is a massive confidence booster on top of what has been a defensively steady beginning.

Let’s see if we can make it three PL wins from three and then get a bit more business done.

In the remaining 35 games I think we can expect Kane to score around 20 goals and Son around 15. I cannot see more than 10 in total from the rest of the squad. Moura has the occasional great game, Bergwjin cannot finish at all and as we are now playing with three defensively minded midfield players we can’t expect more than a small handful of goals from them.
Paratici/Levy made a monumental cock up with our managerial search and it appears they have done the same with the transfer window. For all his so called contacts and ability in the transfer market, Paratici has not done a particuarly good job.

  • 62rovinella says:

Where is the striker after all these windows….🤢🤢….
    Creative midfielder????
Not that much of a successful window for me.
We may have brought in a few good players but still lacking in some departments 🤔🤔…coys

  • Niall D says:

    DH,
Much of what I have thought.
I was of the opinion that Paraticis was this great name in the Italian league, with an in depth insider knowledge of who was available and get the best price for players from supposed cash stricken Italian clubs, we were linked with, (excuse spelling)
Vahulovic, Martinez, Skinnar, Insigne, Nandez, Tomyishu, Daamsagard.Kessie even Ronaldo
We got a back up keeper Gollini and Romero then two Spanish players from Barcelona “B” team
And some 18 year old from France, we’re not famous for buying young players who flop. 🙄
What happen to Sabizer(20 odd mil) ,or Jocim Anderson, Aouar, Paulinha.
We seem to promise the earth and end up with a couple of sods
There really hasn’t been a marquee purchase, nor a definitive slot into the first team game changer.
We seem to take so long over negotiations.
Now I’m not sure just how much of the above mentioned names were media BS.
Nor what the restrictions were on Paraticis, however I remain to be impressed given the hype.
BTW keep losin posts as the Email field goes blank after me filling it.
This happening to any one else??

  • wentworth says:

An underwhelming couple of games ( ok we are top and that is pleasing) and now an underwhelming transfer window after so much seemed to be promised.
We can’t get rid of the poor signings ( what a surprise!) so we will be left with at least 5 players who have high wages but won’t play unless N’Dombele can get his attitude sorted.
Not only can we rid unwanted players but also we can’t seem to attract any decent signings.
We have made an encouraging start with a solid first team but very little back up. No creative midfielder and no striker ( we haven’t signed a decent one since Berbatov?) Also no cover at right back although the young Paskotski looks promising and is far better than the hapless Doherty. Maybe we will get Emerson Royal over the line…fingers crossed. Apparently he is the real deal.
Disappointed we missed out on the promising Tomiyasu cos Levy would’t pay an extra 2 million. Guess what he’s going to Arsenal!!!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Last minute surprises aside it’s rather disappointing that we haven’t recruited an attacking midfielder. I hope they haven’t been wasting their time trying to get Traore.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Seems Aurier is having his contract cancelled and becomes a free agent. Another player we won’t get a transfer fee for.

  • Niall D says:

If we’re all honest manager wise, player wise, how many of those names were on our list.
I didn’t see too many mention Nuno as first choice manager, no one mentioned Gill, Gollini, Royale, or Romero as top of their lists, there is nothing really to excite me here, yet again we’re are prospectors hoping for gold way down the river, I do hope our speculations come good.
As the window closes the evasive game changer has eluded us yet again.
No midfield general, no back up striker to bring on.
Hopefully being top will be, a spring board and some of those whom we signed in other windows will step up to the mark and earn their wages, but it is a long process which will take time, but one or two decent signings may have taken us a step or two forward.
Why not Sabizer at 20 mil, why not Ings at 25 Million, why not Joc him Anderson???

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Niall, I don’t think Andersen would have been any better than we have seeing the improvement in Sanchez and Dier so far this season. I understand we were negotiating for Ruben Neves which would have been a very good signing, whether it has any legs or it got anywhere before the deadline I don’t know.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Thinking on the one in one out model we seem to be following it’s unlikely we freed up a squad place by moving on Winks or Ndombele in order to bring anyone in.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It’s all a bit odd…..we have been linked with Weston McKennie from Juve but reports suggest he was offered to Burnley!

  • Geofspurs says:

Well, it’s all over now baby blue. This is the time to forget what could have been, should have been, and what we haven’t got, and focus on supporting what we have got. The next few months will reveal how successful this window was. Let’s just give the boys a chance and get behind them …. you know, like real supporters. COYS!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Well., what a big disappointment for Spurs in this TW. Messi dumped us for PSG! Ronaldo turned us down for United and Kane didn’t go nowhere! Oh and Lamela and Sissoko have gone. And Aurier too! I’ll miss them…

    Still, mustn’t grumble, eh?

But seriously, I am looking forward a lot to see how our new and refreshed squad and coaching team and management do for the rest of the season. You never know, we may all be pleasantly surprised.

What if we just keep winning 1-0 all season? In all of the next 35 PL matches! If we do, then we will be PL champs, 2021-22… Haha!

    Up the Spurs!

    • Geofspurs says:

Yep, HT. two points in front. All we have to do is keep winning. How hard can that be. The title is ours to lose! : – )

  • Niall D says:

    Hi folks
Well it’s all over now, we basically had to give away Lamella, Aurier, and Sissoko.
Forgive me if like HT in our last game I’m slightly underwhelmed by our TW window.
TQ was just using Anderson as an example of the many names we have been linked to that we at least know, I could also have used Coutinho, Neves,Aaron’s, Traore all premier league experienced players.
Whilst ManU Sign Ronaldo, Chelsea bag Lukau, City Grealish
We buy in the bargain bin yet again. We near had to pay someone, anyone to take Aurier, who the fek is our scouting team to have taken this guy in the first place. Then get Doherty as his back up.
We’ll we are where we are, we’re top of the league for now.
    Let’s hope we’ve shopped clever.

  • TK says:

Emerson Royal has the reputation of being filled with great promise that’s never quite been fulfilled. Let’s hope the promise, in the end, outpaces the lack of fulfillment.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I think it’s a very good looking TW for Spurs. It looks like the start of a proper and well thought out rebuild to me.

When a team is rebuilding, to buy some very talented and highly rated, on form young players in Europe/the world, whilst they are replacing out of form and favour older guys, is surely what is needed.

We have also promoted two of our home-grown, younger, upcoming guys to the first team. With Tanganga (22) and Skipp (21 this month) both looking very promising in the first 3 PL games of the season. And to me our squad as a whole, suddenly looks much younger and more dynamic. Fresh!

Just one more thing. I insisted at the start of this TW and all last season, that I felt that we already had a very good squad that just needed some tweaking and to start gelling again, as more of a team. I now think that we have definitely improved more on the squad. And with some, young and exciting new prospects now thrown in, I’m more confident than I was. And I was already pretty confident to begin with… And I look forward, not back.

I won’t say much more on this. Because all we can now do as Spurs supporters, is wait and see. And as Geof has already suggested… Support!

  • jod says:

The usual reality gap in the comments. In the aftermath of Covid clubs across Europe are in financial difficulties, Both Madrid clubs and Barcelona are £1bn in debt, which means selling players is a nightmare. This in turn limits what we can buy. As Jurgen Klopp put it “we can’t spend money we don’t have”. But clearly from some of the comments people are living in a fantasy football world where financial reality doesn’t apply. When I look at our squad it’s actually in pretty good shape. We don’t have any back up for Kane but that has been true for years, no one who is any good wants to come to sit on the bench. We have options across the rest of the team, its how well we use them. I’d hope we start scoring more but football is a simple game. If you score one more than the opposition you win. So if the defence remains as stingy as its been so far we won’t have to break any scoring records. Trying to get rid of players is clearly going to be an ongoing problem for clubs and I can see quite few contracts being run down where before Covid the player would have been sold.

  • jod says:

One other thing I’m thankful for, we didn’t sign Traore. Fast as lightening, extremely powerful, zero end product. When you already have plenty of wide players you don’t need to burn up your limited cash supply on a player like that.

  • wentworth says:

Well, after an uninspiring transfer window still leaving us short in midfield and up front, we remain top of the prem for two weeks with an average squad of players and some we should have shifted. Our biggest problem is lack of depth when one looks at our bench with no game changers or “super subs”. We only have players to run down the clock.

Where will we be in mid season or at the end? Realistically, we are light years behind Man C.,Man utd, Liverpool and Chelsea. So we will likely be scrapping for 5/6th place with Leicester, Everton, W. Ham. ( Norwich are already down!). There might be one surprise team but the top four are most likely sewn up. Money has talked for many seasons now. Same old, each season.

With Poch, we managed to have some exciting times regularly hitting top 4 playing great football, dominating possession and scoring goals. But our team has gone. So what can we expect this season? Lots of ups and downs. So far we have the ups rather precariously with 1-0 wins. The crunch is coming on Sunday 19th when we could still be top. Beat Chelsea 1-0 ….now that would be something. Living in hope despite the the lack of a creative, goalscoring midfielder. Watch out for your ankles Harry…we need you.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. On behalf of all posters I feel the need to apologise that our comments do not meet your high standard of realism. All I can say is that we are only human.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Jod – both the Madrid clubs being in so much debt didn’t stop Real from bidding 200m for M’bappe and them signing Cavaniga or Athletics from re-signing Greizman. As usual there is serious difference between your condescending comments and reality. If we had such a good window can you please let me know other than from Kane and Son where the goals will come from.
