Match Thread – Spurs Look To Vitesse After Impressive Newcastle Comeback

|

Few Tottenham Hotspur fans would’ve foreseen the start (or the end) we had against a poor Newcastle United side last weekend, but finding ourselves 1-0 down in the opening two minutes, the team woke up and whilst it wasn’t a vintage showing, goals from Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Sonny did the trick for all three points. Fortunately, Eric Dier’s ridiculous late own goal shouldn’t dampen spirits as we head towards the midweek Europa Conference League clash with Vitesse.

Thursday sees us at the halfway stage in our Group G battle and Nuno Espirito Santo will be determined to protect our unbeaten record, so on current form, that upcoming game will be the Group decider.

Nuno will inevitably rotate the starting lineup again to try and keep players fresh, but Vitesse could be our fourth straight win since the Arsenal disaster and that’s been the necessary response even if performances can still improve.

Get Thursday out the way, then it’s West Ham, Burnley and Manchester United and there’s every chance we can move through October unbeaten.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

HT …. I completely agree with your half-time score but how do you think it will end after the first eleven enter the frey? (3-2?) 🙂

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof…..the first eleven will find it difficult entering the frey from back in Blighty! lol

  • Geofspurs says:

Yea! Yipeee! Whoopy do, Get in there! …. first on page 3. Doesn’t take much to excite me these days! lol

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Congratulations Geof…..

I see that Nuno has left the entire Magpies starting 11 at home. So, as I will never predict a loss for Spurs, it has to be a draw for tonight’s mob, I’m afraid… 🙁

But we might win…. You never know!

    Oh sod it!

    Spurs to win, 2-3!

  • PompeyYid says:

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Wow…..Nuno has surprised us all with his line-up! lol

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’d love to see Dane score…

With no Harry on the bench to replace him tonight, he really could do with one or two goals to get him going for the season.

  • wentworth says:

Grim first half. Not one player staking a claim to be on the bench against West Ham. Let’s have a look at some of the youngsters. Surely they can be better than this lot.

  • wentworth says:

Well, well, well. Shocking performance. One shot on target. Not one player stepped up.

Winks..ghastly. Dele.. invisible, Lo Celso.. rubbish. Begweijn and Gil …poor . Scarlett seemed to be in tears. Defence and Keeper battled away. So depressing that we have no reserves who could make a claim to be on the bench. None of the deserve to be around for West Ham. I would keep the youngsters who did not even get a game. For me Nuno is a No No.
We had at least 7 full internationals on the pitch. I could not see one. Absolutely awful.

  • Drdrums11 says:

What a travesty of a performance against a mediocre Dutch side. So frustrating to watch how completely overrun in the midfield we were. How does Nuno not send in any replacements there? Is it a coincidence that every game Winks plays goes this way? Another pathetic effort by Dele and Scarlet was very disappointing as well. We just seem like a slow team without any ideas. Yes this eleven don’t play much or together for that matter but that doesn’t excuse being second to the ball and the lack of effort. Now it’s gonna be an uphill battle to even get out of the group in this low end tournament competition. Our midfield lost this game and it shows that those players aren’t even good enough to play in the Dutch league let alone the Premiership.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We are seriously lacking back-ups to Hojbjerg and Skipp in the centre of the park, Winks is poor and Lo Celso isn’t a DM and should be played further forward to be effective. Tanganga was the only one that looked half decent today.

  • Love totty says:

For the record, I don’t get the notion that the NLD is just another game. Football is all about passion on and off the pitch. Those locals lucky enough to go to games get it big time and transmit that to the rest of us.

Shame about the result tonight. It is hard for any player to play well if the team as a whole isn’t gelling, but it is disappointing that so many second balls and individual challenges were lost.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It could have been worse…..just ask Jose whose Roma side have lost 6-1 to Bodo/Glimt……who? lol

    • TK says:

Thanks for cheering me up, TQ!

    • BelgianSpur says:

Having said that, Roma are currently 2nd of their group, 1 point off the top, and would go through if the group stages ended tomorrow.

We are currently 3rd in a farmer’s competition.

I’m not sure we’re really in a position to make fun of anyone else at the moment…

  • Spurfect One says:

I’m at the stage where results like this are not really surprising anymore. I think Dele for our and his own sake, should seek an exit in the Summer. Jose mentioned his training which clearly showed Dele’s application to apply all of his ability to hone his craft was lacking, He probably realized watching England at the Euro’s he needed to take his profession a lot more serious to get back to where he was, hence his infamous training clips last Summer, the problem is , Dele can’t just train harder for one Summer and expect to be sharp and somewhere near when he was at his best, in my opinion, he has let himself regress too much, i also think Eriksen not picking him out anymore has effected him more than most would have anticipated. That’s no excuse though, as Dele statically is the most dispossessed player in our whole squad, He is even struggling with basics like ball control and simple passes.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Sad but true Spurfect One, time for him to move on.
