Match Thread – Spurs Look To Vitesse After Impressive Newcastle Comeback

|

Few Tottenham Hotspur fans would’ve foreseen the start (or the end) we had against a poor Newcastle United side last weekend, but finding ourselves 1-0 down in the opening two minutes, the team woke up and whilst it wasn’t a vintage showing, goals from Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Sonny did the trick for all three points. Fortunately, Eric Dier’s ridiculous late own goal shouldn’t dampen spirits as we head towards the midweek Europa Conference League clash with Vitesse.

Thursday sees us at the halfway stage in our Group G battle and Nuno Espirito Santo will be determined to protect our unbeaten record, so on current form, that upcoming game will be the Group decider.

Nuno will inevitably rotate the starting lineup again to try and keep players fresh, but Vitesse could be our fourth straight win since the Arsenal disaster and that’s been the necessary response even if performances can still improve.

Get Thursday out the way, then it’s West Ham, Burnley and Manchester United and there’s every chance we can move through October unbeaten.

Very succinctly put HT! :- )

  • BelgianSpur says:

HT going back to my original post, I wasn’t trying to convince you or anyone else. I was expressing a personal opinion, which you may agree with or disagree.

I explained why I felt that way, no more, no less.

You then passed a judgment on that opinion, essentially implying that people who thought that way either a) lacked passion, or b) didn’t know better because they were too far away. It may have not been your intention, but it was the result nonetheless.

It would have been perfectly fine for you to express a different opinion, and explain why. That’s what forums like VS are for. But the moment you start judging or trying to discredit others, on the basis of location or otherwise, for holding different opinions – that’s a step too far, for me.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

BS, I wasn’t making any judgement upon you whatsoever. Show me where I have done so? I haven’t! I was simply saying my own stuff on the matter.

I only posed questions as to why non locals such as yourself, may not feel the same passion about the club they support as those that are more local that perhaps understand more so, the rivalries. And you answered my question… I didn’t judge your answer either. I just responded as to how I feel it is so…

I very succinctly wrote that I think there is no right or wrong in the matter. Which surely suggests that I made no judgement of you at all, at all! 🙂

    • BelgianSpur says:

Fair enough HT. As I said, I’m sure it wasn’t your intention but I found it clumsy. In any case, case closed.

  • Arky says:

I don’t think that it was just a bad day at the office, at the Emptycrates. The fundamentals are still flawed with our team. At the moment we are winning, in my mind due to individual ability or better quality of players. We are not winning because of a team performance or a defined strategy. Our attack runs out of ideas pretty quickly after the half way line. Our defense isn’t rock solid.

No doubt three points are three points, I welcome all three points. I welcome three points in all manner. I’d gladly take all the gifted three points that the referee and oppo hand to us.

The comeback against Newcastle wasn’t impressive. Why was it a comeback to begin with ? Even the final score line isn’t impressive. But hats off to Sergio Reguilon and Eric Dier on how they responded on the field with regards to the emergency, this was impressive.

Had we a team strategy, HK and others could have hit more than 3 pass Newcastle. Newcastle were/are a bunch of dead men walking.

Nuno was out the door at Wolves for a reason. I fear that Nuno is just a interim caretaker headcoach. Nothing to see or celebrate here, for now.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi Arky
Re Nuno I’m much the same and remain to be convinced.
A win against Newcastle is hardly note worthy, but its still 3 points and as good as a win against any other prem team.
However with this win, given Newcastle were buzzing considering the positive week they had is just a bit more positive, when we couple it with the result against Villa it may be a positive move.
Is Nuno the way forward, I don’t know, is he a safe pair of hands until we get who we actually want possibly.
But I did enjoy our last two results and (indeed) performances, we are in transition and (my self included) need more patience and need to expect just a bit less (probably).
But hopefully we are just starting to progress.
A wee tip for all Spurs chums and TK in his travels
Never take an Eejit with you anywhere
You can always find one where ever you go. 😉

  • TK says:

Youre right about one thing, BS. Being alone against the majority neither makes the majority right nor you wrong.

    that being said, wait….

What was it that your were wrong about? Whatever it was, you were wrong, wrong, wrong.

  • TK says:

Failure to show up and play seriously in a NLD is simply awful. It’s an insult to the supporters. It’s an insult against the image in the mirror. It’s like the Flemish playing like the Phlegm-ish. here’s spitting in your eye after all those tickets you paid for.

    • Geofspurs says:

I think you might be over-reacting again. We played badly in the NLD. No Spurs supporters were happy about that. But it’s football. It happens. You win some and you lose some. Does this help your perspective?
If not, try this …. we all fail at some point in life, either small time or big time, when that happened to you did everyone around you condemn you for not trying. If they did it would explain the overreaction, I suppose.

  • Arky says:

Hi Niall, its true that St.James was sold out for days and the toon army was jubilant. The atmosphere and the excitement was indeed much in the stands. Fourteen years is a long long time, so the fans were happy. Doubt it for the players and Bruce. My point being, we played a weak, demoralized, no win team at the foot of the table. I too am happy for the three points. I am not happy with the performances of the manager. I have to be critical because I see no progress on the field of play for a well drilled cohesive team. And of course I too enjoyed our last two results, we are fifth!!! COYS!

  • Niall D says:

    Hi Arky
I get your point, but due to the,” stop start” nature of the league this year, I’m still prepared to as they. say here, “Howl my whisht ” hold my tongue, I want to give Nuno at least as much time as JM.
I am still very much on the fence, I do think the job is bigger than him, but can be convinced otherwise.
But I do think we improved over the last few games with more goals and definately more aggressive forward play, but we’re not there yet.
Re Newcastle, if they didn’t win last Sunday with the backing of that crowd “they’re doomed”.

  • TK says:

The Newcastle players know that few of them will be Newcastle players in the next year or two, and that’s nothing to feel good about. Their supporters know that few of these players will be at Newcastle in the next year or two and that’s something to fell good about.

At Spurs, it’s all up in the air. When will Dele Alli go? Or will he stay. The next manager–next year–might love him. Sanchez? Who knows? lo Celso? Who knows? Indeed, who knows about 75% of our players. Son will still be with us. Hjobjorg and his fine midfield partner will still be with us. Lloris will not. Davied, no. Kane? WTFK? Dpherty., No. Gollini, who knows. Reguilon, in Spain. Romero in N17. Royal Jelly, N17. Rodon, I hope N17. Dier gone. Tanganga. I don’t know. Winks long gone. Sesssegnon at Fulham. Ndombele, wow hard to tell. Gil I hope is in N17. Moura gone, He’ll never go good in the final third. Jack Clarke, gone. Sarr, N17. Whiteman, not a clue.

    Any takers?

  • Geofspurs says:

Arky …. I understand your point. Compared to previous seasons we have not performed too well. But when you study the table we are joint fifth with some big clubs below us. We remain in the mix which is where we need to be. Obviously a couple more games could move us in either direction, but that remains to be seen.

If anyone doubts the influence GD could have …. as it stands we would be out of CL contention due to …. GD.

  • PompeyYid says:

For me the NLD is simply about bragging rights no matter where your team finishes in the league.

If your team plays crap and doesn’t look up for it, win or lose, we the fans have every right to moan n whinge.

This thread by the way is regards our game tomorrow night, the NLD has hijacked it lol! see that’s how much it means to either side’s supporter! COYS

    • BelgianSpur says:

I agree that we have every right to complain if performances are bad. But that is irrespective of the opponent as far as I’m concerned.

I just think beating a team in a single game means nothing if you end up below them in the table.

  • TK says:

My girl friend thinks I’m coming over to check out her new drapes in the drawing room. I think I’m going over for a snuggle. I guess I’ll say I’m okay with the drapes, but I know what’s on my mind.

PY, it doesn’t matter whether the thread was set up for the game tomorrow. We’re going to discuss what’s on our minds when we put fingers to keyboard, no? I’m always up to point out how odious are the goons down the road.

As for tomorrow night’s match? Who are we playing? What’s the name of the competition? Can’t keep track of some of these things.

But a NLD? Now that gets attention without trying.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Seems Doherty is still injured so has to be replaced by Tanganga in my predicted line-up early in the thread. Nuno has confirmed that the starting 11 from Sunday will be staying at Hotspur Way to train for the West Ham game.

  • PompeyYid says:

TQ2S, as the starting 11 from Sunday’s game are Home alone, lol!, it is looking very likely that the team tomorrow will be as you predicted earlier in the thread, except for Doh! of course, being replaced by Tanganga.

John, Clark, White n Markanday being amongst the subs. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi PY…….it would be nice to see a bit of Markanday if the game allows, he has been getting lots of praise for his performances as an attacking midfielder in our U23 games.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi Folks
This is what I wanted this competition for, it will give the squad a chance to get out and play competitively, plus the manger may see something or someone he can bring into the first 11 based on actual play rather than training scenarios, plus it gives fringe player and some youngsters European experience and may put a few into the “shop window” for January.
If it is TQ’s named 11 it’s still not a bad line up.
They are a decent team in a decent league, look at what Ajax just did to Dortmond last night, so no push over, I’d take an away draw, but will hope for a 1 or 2 nil for us COYS..

  • wentworth says:

A great chance for Winks, Lo Celso, Dele, Bergwijn and Davies to step and put themselves in the shop window. Hopefully, some of young ” stars” will get a run out too. We are very short of of future prospects unlike many of the other top teams that seem to turn out youngsters on a regular basis.
We have such a long way to go to catch up with the top four. Always living in hope of a return to the Super Spurs of a while ago.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Watching the United game, we were linked to Demiral in the summer, he is some player and would make a great CB pairing with Romero if we could prise him away from his parent club Juventus.
