Match Thread – Spurs Get A European Distraction Following Palace Woes

|

It was a very bright and promising start to the 2021/22 campaign for Tottenham Hotspur – if we ignore the Pacos de Ferreira no show – , but the September international break well and truly stunted our momentum with a woeful showing at the weekend against Crystal Palace.

Reduced to ten men, on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat and we only mustered one shot on target from a total of two attempts – for the first time ever, Harry Kane failed to register even an effort and I don’t believe he had a touch in their half across the 90 either.

But we take a Premier League break again this midweek as we are in Group G Europa Conference League action once more, making the trip to French Ligue 1 side, Rennes.

I have no idea what to expect from Rennes, and after the Palace showing, I’ve no idea what to expect from Spurs either, especially if Nuno Espirito Santo makes numerous changes again which I think we all expect.

With six league games played in their season, it seems Rennes have only won once with a 2-0 defeat to Reims earlier on Sunday, so you’d like to think form wise we are favourites and there has to be a strong reaction from the players to Saturday’s nonsense.

There has to be…

Rennes...

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Gollini, Doherty, Rodon, Tanganga, Davies, Ndombele, Skipp, Bergwijn, Lucas Moura, Gil, Kane.

    Substitutes

Lloris, Reguilón, Højbjerg, Winks, Emerson Royal, Alli, Austin, John, Scarlett, Fagan-Walcott, Omole, Markanday.

hmmmmm….guess the formation. Plenty of attacking intent, maybe Lucas playing behind Kane in a 4231?

  • 123spurs says:

Strong line up, pathetic effort, is it the tactics or the players.

  • 123spurs says:

    Simply unacceptable.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Good result in the circumstances. Up against a highly partisan crowd and a determined team putting in lethal challenges (which did for Bergs and Lucas) and showing some nice touches in attack. Also taking into account our third choice central defence pairing, probably our second choice back pairing, Harry having to subbed mid way through the second half and any game plan having to go out of the window, the lads did as well as could be expected particularly N’Dombele in his first match this season, including friendlies. As I’ve said on previous occasions sometimes you have to make allowances for our performances, which some, including Brown and Hoddle doing the BT Sport analysis, seem reluctant to do.

Good result pmsl, it was a strong 1st 11, they are mid table in the french league and lost their last 2. They even dominated attempts on goal.

    • Stan Rosenthal says:

They didn’t play that way from what I saw. You should make judgements on their performance on the day not where they are in the league or on past form.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Not exactly convincing, results aside I think it’s fair to say we have been outplayed in all but the Pacos home tie. If we allow Chelsea to play through us as easily as Rennes did it could get embarrassing.

  • Niall D says:

Historically a good side they have been in and around top 5 in recent years and this season have, aparently strengthened , they were very physical and got away with a lot of dodgy tackles, they were up for the game tonight, it’s still a decent result away from home in Europe, a few fringe players got an airing, what was, wrong with Sess getting a game?.
N’Dombers did OK in flashes, what is wrong with Doherty?
I can see the similarities between Gil and Ginola, as someone else said, still looks, a bit light weight, needs to put some muscle on.
I feel we still haven’t quite hit our stride in any game this season, I’m just waiting for something to click.
For me the internationals screwed us, a bit and we lost any momentum we may have had.
    Hopefully we’ll click against Chelsea.
But decent result tonite, performance could be better.

  • Geofspurs says:

Fair enough result, given our selection issues. Shouldn’t be any trouble at home. Hope everyone recovers for Chelsea.

  • jod says:

Moura injured, Bergwijn injured. This is why you are better off out of Europe than playing in a joke competition like this. We will go into a game against Chelsea with a team consisting of whoever is fit enough to play. No doubt when we lose that will be ignored and people will pretend we could have won with half a team.

  • 123spurs says:

Struggled in 3rd tier of European football, back up players failed to deliver we should have enough players in our locker. Team selection were full of internationals.

  • allan says:

Yes it is the 3rd tier European comp but one I would have expected us to win . We were not good enough to qualify for anything else .. Why do fans think that we are better than we are ? We simply at present are not good enough for any other European comp . What ever one thinks of this comp it still offers the chance of a cup .
I am frankly beginning to become disappointed with the new players we have signed . Can anyone give me at least 2 reasons per player why we bought these 5
Without Son we are toothless and not sure ,esp with the Kane situation , where the goals will come from ?
We have flattered to deceive and being top of the league was a completely false position .
We were lucky to win vs MC and Wolves and made really hard work of a spirited Watford .
Has Levy yet again made a mess of the footballing side of the club ?

  • Niall D says:

    Morning folks
Jod, that was my worry in this competition, the injuries, but I sort of expected to see them appear sometime after Christmas.
Allan re player recruitment I’m much in the same boat, we always seem to buy” prospects “, the guy Emerson so far looks decent, but as, I said in earlier posts, I feel our money could’ve been targeted a bit more sensibly.
Hopefully we’ll get a decent result at the weekend.
    COYS.

Not having seen the game last night.. I have seen various reports / highlights, It seems these lower level european teams are putting the boot in on better skilled players… and getting away with it by referees lower standards. We are in a dangerous competition and more injuries will happen to spurs players. A very worrying time for all at THFC as it appears our PL status will be mid / bottom half of the table until christmas… COYS

Same old story, second to the loose ball, poor first touch, inaccurate passing and pedestrian pace.
