Match Thread – Nothing To See Here, Move Along For Newcastle v Spurs

|

After another dull, and pretty boring break in the fixture list for those who aren’t that interested in international football, the proper action is back for Tottenham Hotspur fans as we make the trip up to newly minted Newcastle United.

Following their recent majority takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, but the Premier League being ‘assured’ the Saudi Arabian Government will not be involved in the running of the club – even though Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the Chairman of PIF and it’s basically the states savings account whose raison d’etre is to secure non-oil based revenue for Saudi Arabia as a whole – what this actually means for our trip up to St James’ Park is open for debate.

Newcastle United fans will definitely be boosted after all their battles with Mike Ashley, but given the wealth of the new ‘non-Government linked’ owners, it’s easy to imagine there will be a good degree of uncertainty, both amongst management and players when it comes to their futures.

Having ended our three game losing streak with the 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, we will be looking to make that back to back wins again and given their start to the season, you’d have to make us firm favourites to do just that, as long as we turn up.

But of course, so far that has been the story of 2021/22 – will Spurs turn up?

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Bit worrying that two of our players have reportedly tested positive for covid, even more worrying that it is speculated to be Son and Gil. Good job Berwijn is said to be back in full training.

  • Geofspurs says:

Didn’t know that TQ. Does that mean Son will have to self-isolate on the pitch and oponents won’t be allowed to go near him. Could work out nicely! lol

  • TQ2Spurs says:

lol…….when he is on form defenders don’t get anywhere near him anyway Geof.

  • jod says:

BelgianSpur – To be fair to EUFA they did try and enforce FFP, but City’s high price team of lawyers were too much for them. At this stage its anyone’s guess what form any rules on human rights might take in football but it’s clear EUFA are taking their first steps in that direction. Whether premier league club’s lawyers could defend the indefensible if it ever came to a confrontation is anyone’s guess. But clearly English football would have to be forced to accept that some people should not be allowed to own football clubs no matter how rich.

  • Geofspurs says:

At some stage, probably the sooner the better, we’re going to have to do something about our GD. It looks like the extra point it provides could prove more crucial than usual this season. On the off chance that Nuno gets his strategy advice from VS here’s the way to do it …. score more and concede less!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Sounds like a plan Geof! 🙂

  • TQ2Spurs says:

A win would put us in a surprisingly good position in the table, can we do it or will we be all Spursy again?

  • Niall D says:

TQ I know what you are saying, how many times last season and the season before were we in this, sort of position where a win takes us in and around the top 3 but somehow through our own fault or by the Refs design we lose impetus.
Ref tomorrow here’s hoping we actually get the rub of the green something I don’t often do 4-0 Spurs we’re giving them a drubbing would just love to spoil the party.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I would love it too Niall but the signs aren’t in our favour if Sonny is out. We really need Kane to find some form and score without Son’s assists if he is one of the covid positive players.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Seems the speculation could be wrong and Sonny tested negative for covid and will be available for the game, hope this is true.

  • Geofspurs says:

You’re not alone with that hope! lol Maybe it’s a 3-0 win after all?

  • Geofspurs says:

I’m really missing the WSL games this week, and the next couple of weeks. Bloody internationals.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof, I watched our league cup game against Charlton in midweek, our new Aussie striker Simon came on for the last 25 minutes or so. Got to say she looks a lot sharper around the box than any of our other strikers so hope she settles in ok and stays injury free.

      • Geofspurs says:

Hi TQ …. I missed that one, didn’t even know they’d played and don’t even know the result (I’ll look it up now). That’s good news re Simon.

        • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….it was a narrow 1-0 win against lower league opposition. We played most of the game in the opposition’s half and dominated the play but as usual we couldn’t convert that into goals.

  • Niall D says:

Would just love us to click today, though I don’t see it with the internationals just over, I just hope we don’t limp home after a, 1-1 they get a stupid pen at 91 mins.

  • PompeyYid says:

Though I predict we will win today! ever the optimist

There is a niggle in the back of my head says we will not!

Another very important game to make a statement, have we ever fulfilled that? NOPE!

We will probably be all SPURSY and I hate the bloody word.

I have always been optimistic one way or another…BUT! COYS

    • Geofspurs says:

PY …. Are you on that bloody fence again, mate? lol

      • PompeyYid says:

Geofspurs…..that’s a big yes! I really do have a sore arse from all that sitting lol!

I have always been positive, well 98%, but am getting a negative streak in me, don’t know why lol!

  • wentworth says:

I am still puzzled when we sign stars of the future and they disappear of the radar. Sessegnon ( who was outstanding for Fulham0 and Jack Clarke form Leeds. Then we have top so called stars like Lo Celso, Bergweijn and N’Dombele who turn out to be average at best. I am now wondering about Bryan Gil ..will we get the best out of him or will he become another bench warmer or past potential star?
What do we do to our young players and why have Dyer and particularly Winks gone backwards?
    Thank goodness for Son.

  • Danny Winter says:

Am I the only one who got confused when I saw the NFL game on BBC2 – until I remembered we were away.

It’s been one of those weeks.

  • PompeyYid says:

Aw! sod it, it cannot be helped….we are going to win today! COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

Looks like we can go 5th if we win and WHU stay in front of Everton …. currently winning 1-0 with 15 minutes left. It doesn’t feel like we deserve to be 5th! There must be a lot of really bad teams in the PL this season! lol

  • Niall D says:

Just thinking on todays game, being a bit philosophical, in reality due to this funny start to our season how many times have we been able to pick our strongest 11 or how long has Nuno had to prepare for games. I would suggest in reality maybe 3 games we have been able to pick our best 11 one way and another.

  • wentworth says:

Probably our strongest team and bench today. We must not lose this.
Once we had Lloris, Walker, Rose, Toby, Verts, Dier, Dembele, Eriksen, Dele, Son and Kane ….hmmm. We’ve gone backwards rapidly.
