Match Thread – Moving Swiftly On, Spurs Head To Shkendija

|

Tottenham Hotspur received an unexpected break on Tuesday evening with news that our EFL Cup tie with Leyton Orient had been postponed following a Coronavirus outbreak in their ‘bubble’ – so we move swiftly on to Thursday evening’s Qualifying Third Round Europa League clash with Shkendija.

Whatever happens with Orient, is now up in the air with claims they could field a squad who tested negative and the rumblings of the game potentially going ahead next week and then maybe a bit of readjustment for the fourth round tie (making the assumption we would be victorious!).

For now, it’s a couple of extra days off for manager Jose Mourinho’s group but I doubt the extra 48 hours in effect will do anything for us on an injury front with the returning Gareth Bale still ruled out until mid-October, Sergio Reguilon out until the weekend and Japhet Tanganga still sidelined.

Still, there are plenty of positives to come out of the Southampton clash, and even though we don’t now play tonight, allowing for some rotation, the players will definitely want to follow on with another win in Europe.

Shkendija...

With any luck and given the pandemic, we could get a bye in this one…

We could get a byes all the way to the final and win the damn thing without even playing in it!

  • El Jefe says:

LOL and fair play – END OF!

  • El Jefe says:

P.S. I did leave you a friendly ending msg on the other thread – hope you read it – it was sincere of course otherwise would not have bothered writing it – but there you go – I mean no harm – my thinking and reasoning is just for our own best interests as I see it that’s all ……..!

  • El Jefe says:

Blimey some on here questioned Aarons coming to us when I was suggesting such earlier in the summer as a decent/good deal (price dependent of course) – he’s only supposedly ending up at Barcelona LOL! That’s Castagne to Leicester and now Aarons to Barcelona…….!

ND – any thought’s on this as you were also backing me up on both suggestions at the time and arguing for them also?!

I’m happy with Doherty fair play but incredible to see where these other 2 are ending up – Leicester with their pedigree in picking up/off top defensive bargains recently and Barca no less for the other – quite incredible really ……….!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

EJ, I don’t get why you think I am having a go at you by simply having a different opinion to you….. I’m not. And you seem to be displaying some real child-like anger tantrums on here today…

Whereas you keep basically telling me to STFU, by repeating the phrase “end off”! Which insinuates I should give it a rest because you must be correct with everything you say and then you just carry on regardless with the same point over and over!…….. I’m being lighthearted about it and you are being plain rude…..

Now I’m saying end of… OKAY! FFS!

Spurs to win 6-1! But only if they play a stupidly high line and Kane and Son are not already completely knackered from overplaying!

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

As I see it as an impartial observer I think there’s a bit of over-reaction here HT . EJ is right about the rules and getting the Orient game out of the way. I think he was being light hearted too and as he says left you a friendly message. Hate seeIng you guys fall out.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi EJ
Re Aaron’s, yep I did and still do rate him as a player also your suggestion re Castagne was a sound one
Similarly we, agreed on Hoj. I think Doh is a good signing and given time should prove a good investment for the club and hopefully improve us, at RB position.
Can’t say much on the striker position as
1 I don’t know enough of many of those listed
2 I don’t know which stories are true.
I think in the current climate we may be actually seeing a players true worth, rather than the telephone number costs of previous years.
Who in their right mind really would now pay 80 mil for Maguire. The Mersey ferry turns quicker.
You EJ will probably no more on these suggested stkrs than me.
As I said in earlier posts I was concentrating on a bit of music. So Havnt been following the Transfer rumors too much. Still wold like an Erikson type player tho..
And trying to keep my posts short. (except for tonite)
Here guys we are all entitled to our opinions and we can all be passionate about them.
Let’s disagree but not fall out. Pls.
    BTW
Anybody know anything about this Shkendija team.
Fek me how do you even say that. I had to check the spelling 3 Times I think I m still wrong.
    BTW
    Danny
Thanks for the quick turnaround on match thread.

  • El Jefe says:

HT – sorry you felt that way – the “end of” was just basically to emphasize my view point and that I stood by it 100% as I felt quite strongly about it and I also felt I was in a minority at the time on here (so just trying to stand up for my argument as best possible) but it was certainly not in anyway to tell you to shut-up, etc – I agree that would be plain rude (especially just because of a difference of opinion) and furthermore this is a discussion board and everyone has the right to air their opinion, etc and be allowed to express it fully and then discuss further, etc if the opportunity arises and wishing to do so – it’s what makes VS what it is – if you don’t like what someone is saying, etc and this applies to me naturally – don’t keep reading/replying, etc – I would have thought is the best option really but I have never found the need to do so – I think I get on well with most if not all on here and certainly IMHO do try to keep it that way and want it to stay that way for sure!

I went to bed last night early as have been doing recently and then getting up early also and just read the following:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54248560

In the light of this – I respect what the Chairman is saying and I’d accept the decision to re-schedule if that’s what happens based on this especially as they did comply with getting tested and as far as we know without any fuss, etc and this certainly has to carry weight as you originally said if we are being grown-up about it. 1 question that does spring to my mind at least anyway, is what might happen under the circumstances if a Prem club for example demanded testing and the other lower league club refused to?! I did read something last night that Prem clubs were “iffy” for lack of a better word about playing lower league sides currently because of this situation – to what extreme could this actually get?!

I was purely just looking out for our own interests and being a stickler to the rules because this time they did especially favour us and because we are in a ridiculous situation ATM and not of our own doing at that – 3 games a week for a good 2 weeks is quite frankly as I say ridiculous but I guess we just have to get on with it and hope for the best – indeed I don’t think the authorities have a conspiracy against us – just the way things have to be this season and we have to just accept it and do our very best with it.

Even TQ earlier in the thread pretty much basically said he’d hope that Chelsea might have to play a weakened team, etc in the 4th round – at the end of the day Spurs are in a results driven business and anything that helps achieve that naturally within the rules has to be considered favourable and pretty much ultimately OK at least normally I would argue!

Normally I’d be as disappointed as you/anyone at a match not being played and not being able to watch – indeed as a fan the main aspect of it all is indeed getting to watch us play after all – good/bad that’s a completely separate argument.

I did say that this was probably a “greedy” attitude ATM given what the squad are facing but that’s also part of the reason why I backed a bye so strongly – to counter my own self-interest in terms of wanting to watch every game because naturally I can!

Anyway like I said last night to try and end it amicably and show no hard feelings, etc – hope you enjoyed your whisky and the migraine went away ASAP mate ……..!

P.S. SR thanks for seeing my side of the argument especially as regards the sentiment – indeed I think I was being pretty light hearted but maybe it came across wrong especially as HT says with the repeated use of “end-off” – it’s not always easy chatting on here, online, etc even over the phone – as I was recently told by my Doctor indeed – nothing substitute’s face to face/person to person contact – I think PY also said something similar to this on here recently as well!

  • El Jefe says:

Just saw your last post on the other thread from last night – hadn’t refreshed properly for some reason :

Bless you too HT – hope today even if tough is worthwhile after all of the effort you put in, etc!

I did also appreciate you posting the rule for clarification and also your quip about your Orient share-holding, etc, LOL – very fair of you and then lighthearted also!

I think ultimately we just got our wires a bit crossed especially at the end there from the looks of things and like I say in light of their Chairman’s statement – I think as you said being grown-up and reasonable and even compassionate in this extreme circumstance after all I guess we could accept a re-schedule after all we were going to have to play 3 games each week for 2 weeks, etc so if it happens further down the line there’s no extra difficulty and in fact it will be easier as it won’t be back to back weeks as it was supposed to be now!

This said of course head and even heart wise TBH, etc would still have to hope for a bye for our best interests overall, but I can see the reasoning behind a re-schedule and to avoid lots of and big problems further down the line especially in Winter as regards this current deadly situation we’re facing!

I think ultimately I could and should have been more reasonable and even compassionate to the situation yesterday rather than just seeing it as black and white because ultimately it’s in our favour and we’re currently pretty desperate, etc!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    Morning EJ

That’s not quite what I said earlier regarding possibly playing Chelsea in the next round. I said it would be nice to think they would play a weakened side but the fact that they haven’t yet started their european campaign means they have an advantage in that they can play a full strength side if they so wish.

I can easily see the game being shut down again soon. With reports this morning that David Moyes and 2 WHU players have tested positive for covid, and sent home to self-isolate prior to their game last night, it will mean the Arsenal squad (who they played at the weekend) will probably have to be tested if they aren’t still operating a regular testing regime. You can imagine if any are found to be positive it may raise the question whether matches should continue to be played, especially as it has now been suggested that it’s unlikely fans will be allowed back into stadiums before March ’21.

  • PompeyYid says:

TQ2S, Regards your 2nd para’, Mrs PY and myself were only saying the same thing over breakfast this morning.

This Covid pandemic is certainly causing a lot of knicker twisting between us all, come on lads/lassies we all have one thing in common, yep you got it we are YIDS, so keep safe and smiling.

As for tomorrows trip into the wilds of Europe again v Schk? I am thinking a 0-4 win.

Oh yes thank you Danny for the match thread, as I have said prior the timetable is certainly making you earn your crust, lol! COYS

  • Niall D says:

Here’s one I picked up earlier.
    Just a brain teaser.
Sonny became the 6th Spurs player to score 4 goals in a Premier league game.
    Who were the other 5?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Three I know of for sure, ND. Defoe, Klinsmann and Kane.

Defoe scored 5 in a 9-1 win vs Wigan. A veru quick fire hat trick thrown into the mix…… In just a few minutes?

I’m guessing Berbatov… I know he scored 5 in a PL match, but was that for United or Spurs? As for the 5th guy?

But none of these guys can compete with Aurier and his 3 foul throws, all in the one game… 🙂

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Soldado? Janssen?

  • Niall D says:

Got em all HT last one Robbie Keane.
    I can’t believe it either.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I see that Jose cannot answer a straight question when it come to Dele. Why? Pochettino used to get accused of talking in riddles but Jose is no better….

Anyway, I’ll hazard a guess at his line-up for tomorrow.

    Lloris
    Aurier Toby Sanchez Davies
    Winks Sissoko
    Bergwijn Dele? Son
    Kane

  • El Jefe says:

Hi TQ – but effectively given the chance you’d hope they would play a weakened side basically – no ?! I don’t think I got your sentiment wrong, at least I hope not and if I did then I apologise of course!

To be fair naturally nothing would taste sweeter than to win beating everybody especially at their full strength, etc and all the top team’s at that, but that’s being an idealist and romanticist, etc – being realistic you always hope to play the weakest opposition, at their weakest also and always look to exploit their weaknesses on top indeed – we’re talking of a full-on competitive business with massive rewards at stake also not to mention huge costs involved as well!

Personally I would like a bye for the 3rd round and to come up against Barnsley – cannot lie at all but that’s just IMHO!

HT – hope you managed to read my 2 posts from this morning and see that there are no hard feelings – indeed from my side anyway and I did try to clear it up already at the end there yesterday on the other thread – hope we’re good naturally ……..!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Ahh, it had to be Robbie. Who else could it be?

  • El Jefe says:

    https://theboyhotspur.com/have-leyton-orient-been-hard-done-by-not-in-my-book-they-havent/

Just read this – much harsher IMHO than I was yesterday on here, etc and even rude quite frankly – no sympathy shown whatever – indeed blame directly thrown at the Orient players, etc – don’t agree with that (because nobody knows where they got it from, etc – indeed reading the comments section an example is that could have been 1 of the Orient players catching it from an opposition player in a previous game given the situation lower down in the league’s and testing wise, etc) but just goes to show some of the sentiment out there amongst some of our own indeed regarding all this!

I’ll accept a re-schedule if it comes indeed no explanation needed but ideally would prefer a bye and then like I say a home game against Barnsley hopefully next Tuesday – best case scenario I think for the club really and truly – hoping so anyway from my end at least and IMHO of course!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Hi EJ… My frustration at you was because you didn’t get what I was saying at all. Which was simply that none of us actually know the full story and so lets just wait and see what happens…. Unlike some supporters, I wasn’t saying the rule should not be followed. I said we don’t know if it had actually been broken….. Which to me is now obvious because a decision on whether or not the match should go ahead has still not been made, as far as I know… Which suggests to me that it is not as straightforward as just giving Spurs a bye. Otherwise that’s exactly what would’ve happened.

Anyway, we didn’t get to play last night which is a help for this week at least……. I’m not saying any more on this……. We play the match vs Orient, or we don’t… But that is up to all the relevant parties involved. And we will all know in good time….
