Match Thread – Can Spurs Do The Unlikely & Punish Pep Again

|

Following on from Wednesday’s barnstorming FA Cup classic with Everton, Tottenham Hotspur will be holding some small hope of getting back to winning ways on Saturday as we make the trip up to in form table toppers, Manchester City.

Having played so often on a Sunday this season, many fans will be questioning why we didn’t at least get an extra 24 hours off this time, as with extra time on top, it was hardly the best preparation for this one, but we’ll just have to get on with it.

Pep Guardiola has a few injury concerns of his own, with the main one for us being Gareth Bale again but whether we get a slice of luck with either Sergio Reguilon or Serge Aurier and an earlier than expected return for them, well, manager Jose Mourinho’s press conference today will answer those questions.

Despite our 2-0 victory back at the end of November, City are a changed side now, so I imagine I’m not alone in hoping we at least take a point here.

Thanks for the welcome back posts, much appreciated. I have been poorly but am over it. Regarding the debate about JM, I would just like somebody to explain what has been gained by sacking and paying off MP and engaging Mourinho. We failed to maintain a top 4 and CL place, we have allowed him to spend money previously denied Pochettino, we are now just as likely to lose games as to win them irrespective of the opposition, consequently we are 9th in the PL and going in the wrong direction whilst playing the most negative and boring football I can remember in my nearly 70 years of following Spurs. Both Mourinho and Levy are fortunate that there are no crowds in to watch this, as I am sure there would be disquiet expressed. Together with missing out on Bruno Fernandez or Jack Grealish and enlisting Mourinho, Levy has not covered himself with glory lately. Incidentally who scouted Davison Sanchez and recommended him as a PL CB costing 36 million. He should be opening the batting in India as he watches the ball superbly, unfortunately rarely the player he is marking. We now have a wonderful 1 billion stadium and a 2nd rate team to play in it.

Hey Frank, yes your back, love it.

Could have a debate with you here, but will not at this time, except for Moaninosarous OUT! COYS

  • TK says:

My God, Frank. This is the first time in memory that I’ve seen you write something that was not sufficiently negative. Spurs are not playing like a second rate team recently. That’s too generous by half. They’re playing like a team that would enter a match in the Championship in fear.

Apparently JM apologized (of something like that) about how he’s treated Bale and Dele? Crocodile tears, these. But it suggests that he’s aware of how we, the people of Spursland, feel about him. Up the pressure on him.
Also, reports are on line that DL gave Mourinho the MIserable a sweet contract with no way for Spurs to send him packing without paying gobs of cash. So much for thinking DL always protects the financial position of the club. JM our! DL too!

So glad Frank survived. He has the rare form of grumpy that brings gladness. One weight has been lifted.

I would be amazed if the pay off for Jose is as high as some people have been reporting in the media recently. I am sure there are clauses in there which mean we will not have to pay up the entire remainder of his contract. In any case, these pay offs tend pay the manager his salary until he finds another job – I am sure it won’t be long until some other mug believes that Jose is their saviour.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Talking of missing posters…..haven’t seen anything of HT for quite a few days.

DH…..Barcelona would be a good match for Jose….more money than sense! :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PSG currently leading Barca 3-1 at the Nou Camp under their new manager, anyone know anything about him?

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

TQ2Spurs – it’s non stop attack from Poch’s PSG, even though they are 3-1 ahead. Wouldn’t mind him at Spurs . They’ve just got a fourth goal while I am typing this.
    Come back Poch please

  • TQ2Spurs says:

DH….would be useful if he brought Mbappe with him! 🙂

  • 123spurs says:

How was that a peno for Barcelona, isn’t this the reason why VAR was bought in for, the linesman said nothing either.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

123……. I understand where you are coming from, and agree to an extent, but if they called that as accidental there would be accidental trips from behind in the penalty area in every game.

  • 123spurs says:

Seems to me it looked like he tripped over his own legs

    • TQ2Spurs says:

123……that’s what many thought at first but the camera from behind showed that the chasing players knee caught the attackers foot and flicked it behind his other leg.

  • 123spurs says:

If jose is to stay for next season, its over to the players, are you willing to play jose boring tactics and give 100% if not you will be sold. Time to be ruthless

  • wentworth says:

Have a feeling that Sissoko will be the next to be sidelined by Moanino after his comments about Poch being a good coach who taught the team to keep possession. As opposed to the dinoasur Mourinus who gives possession to the opposition. Watch this space. Will Sissoko join Dele, Bale,Dier, Doherty and Aurier for the grumpy Moaner’s treatment? The dressing room is watching.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Welcome back Frank…Glad you have recovered.

We have all said similar comments and now I wonder if Levy has been informed by his assistant Donna, who still reads (hopefully) the spurs blog sites, and media outputs.

What we seem to have forgotten about poch, he did loose the dressing room support, and that the players were too worn-out after the WC / CL Final / season. This was mentioned as players tired / fed up with the constant high intensity training and high press of 5 years or so. Rose, ericsen, toby, jan contracts dispute, dele sidetracked by personal events, and the new stadium financial expenditure by ENIC and very little for the team transfers in and out, resulted in events we had to witness, to date….

However now we have new stadium and soon covid restrictions lifted and jose and players stop making mistakes.. go on to wins us silverware, even if its LC its still a trophy for spurs after 12 years !! Poch has taken a short term PSG contract, to match Jose spurs deal, so looks like he will return, as unfinished business at spurs, he has said. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Where are you HT, if your reading this, I sincerely hope all is well with you and your kin.

Poch back! who started this rumour lol! returnees never works out as you/we all want, note GB., mind that could be down to Moaniniosarous lol! COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

block…..did you have everything crossed when you wrote the last sentence? :- )

  • block 108 spurs says:

TQ2… couple of digits lol. But I was just saying what I have seen on media outlets.

  • Niall D says:

    B108,
Lot of moot points there, lot of em I ve more or less said myself over the last few months.
Those reasons/excuses should be in the past now, but it appears, there is still a bit of a hangover from that time, whilst other teams have moved on, we on the other hand have stagnated even regressed.
As many have said here we could’ve taken the odd dull game if the result and overall outcome was positive, but it looks like it isn’t.
Love your last para m8, wish it were true, but We’ve seen quire a few too many “false dawns”.

  • 123spurs says:

Poch has put us into this position, states declined in his last 2 season, his pressing game was on the decline, his last calender year, from Jan we nearly lost top4, got to CL final and even messed the team up for starting kane.
