It’s Spurs, It’s Summer – That Means It’s Time For Silly Season

|

Well, it turned into quite a fantastic season for Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur with the club battling back from some major disappointments to semi-comfortably seize fourth place and a Champions League spot, taking north London bragging rights over Arsenal who finished two points below us.

With the 2021/22 campaign now at a close, it is a big summer for Conte as he looks to continue reshaping his first team squad into a far more drilled and consistent outfit for the coming 2022/23 campaign, and the quick and early signing of experienced 33-year-old, Ivan Perisic, it certainly looks like Daniel Levy is going to back him and managing director Fabio Paratici in our search for further success.

With plenty of tasty links circulating in the media, it will be interesting to see who comes in next as there are a few key positions we still need to strengthen in, but if Perisic is anything to go by, it could well be an interesting couple of months ahead for fans.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Rodon for me is six of one, half dozen of another, should we sell him? or as 123 says loan him out, only Conte knows that.

He really hasn’t played enough for us to have any real opinion on him! again its down to Conte, the other question is…is Conte saving him? answer who knows! COYS

  • Niall D says:

    Good call PY and, 123
Im just of the opinion that at 24, if he hasn’t forced his, way thru onto the team over the likes of his countryman Davies, who let’s face it, was actually covering that area being a LB by trade, then something is wrong.
Davies indeed has had an excellent showing in that position for us, but for me Rodon should’ve been pushing a bit harder to cement his position.
For me he always lumps the ball to safety too often, giving away possession needlessly,
a big “Row Z” defender and for me we need more.
With that said, did he get a fair chance to settle in?
Or dies Conte not rate him?
I don’t know, with that said I would sell Sanches first.

    • PompeyYid says:

Good breakdown of Rodon there Niall, still leaves many unanswered questions, though he is 24, methinks Conte went for experience regards the two choices, Davies or Rodon, if it was experience then it was a simple choice.

I do agree sell Sanchez before Rodon. COYS

  • block 108 spurs says:

Actually I think Sanchez is a decent back up for cuti and he did ok for the few run in games for us to get 4th place PL Rodon needs to improve his ability and attitude not moan and show dissent when not playing.

Watching england v italy game… same old sideways and back passing, we spurs fans have seen it too much over the years.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

I’ve not seen anything that would suggest Rodon has moaned or shown any kind of dissent regarding playing time, I believe Conte has said himself that Joe has shown a great attitude.

  • 123spurs says:

So poch looking for a new job, ZZ takes up the role it seems. Crazy talk here but If arteta gets sack early on in the season and poch is still available, could it happen.

  • Allan says:

    Hi all
    Richarlison ?
He has proved himself with Everton but is prone to temperamental problems .
Perhaps a similar person to Dembele ?
Is that the reason he has not been snapped up , after Watford , by a bigger team ?
    Thoughts

    • 123spurs says:

Thing is will he happy on the bench. Also if he starts he could be 1st to be subbed before son and kane. Interesting one if he signs though.

  • block 108 spurs says:

The everton striker would be another problem in our squad… attitude and temperamental, from what I have seen of him in everton games and the odd interview and media reports.
Best not make problems for ourselves as we dont need another tanguy problem player

  • Allan says:

The latest report is that Everton want at least 70 mil
    Forget it!

  • 123spurs says:

Not a chance for 70mil. Put the money back in your pocket levy. Never thoughts I’d be saying that.

    • wentworth says:

It was me Niall re Bissouma. I also mentioned Lamptey and Cucurella as being worth a look, especially Cucurella who is far better than anything we have.
If we had Spence on right and top left footer Cucurella on left flank, we had some top attacking wing backs.

  • PompeyYid says:

Apparently deal done agreed, £25m, for Bissouma of Brighton, him to have his medical this Thursday, wait n see for me!

Moura + Winks for Richarlison, rumours/bullshit getting stronger lol!

I note there are no real “ones for the future” listed in all this transfer shenanigans! Conte saying he wants the now ready players.

Are we all excited, in the 5th day of the TW. COYS

  • Niall D says:

My worry here is, that we appear to be buying like for like.
Whilst I rate him highly, when you think on it, he is very similar to Hoj, Bente, and Skipp, is he that creative midfielder with an odd worldie in him that (for me) we need.
Similarly when I think on it, is Richardson just too similar to Kulu, rangy athletic, tough, with an eye for a decent cross or goal, in short more of the same.
Mind you, this has served us since Contes’arrival, what do I know
Confused dot Co dot UK 🤪🤯

  • 123spurs says:

yes like for like for conte system but its an upgrade on what we have, the bench and 5 subs could be all the difference next season. 25mil is a steal

    • wentworth says:

Bissouma is a skilful, strong running midfielder. Great signing if he comes. Now we need Lamptey and Cucurella to bolster the wing back positions.
Not sure about Richalison. Very tempremental.
Waiting for Winks, Bergweijn and others to go.
Apparently Troy Parrot is making good progress and could save us looking for that elusive striker backup.

  • jod says:

Niall D – The fact Bissouma is similar is exactly why Conte bought him. Conte plays with a two man midfield, that demands a certain type of midfielder. If you start with the assumption you need two players for each position then Bissouma is the fourth player he needs for the two positions (I am assuming Winks is basically gone). You could have more creativity if you played with a midfield three but Conte clearly isn’t going to do that, the wing backs are supposed to provide the attacking threat in his system and he doesn’t change it. Given Conte’s fairly rigid adherence to his formation I would be worried if he did make a left field signing.

  • PompeyYid says:

Naill, I think I have to say it, Jod just might be right there, choke choke, jesting lol!

Our man Conte does seem to stick to his preferred, lets say rigid formation, 3-4-3, but then again he may have stuck with that last season because of what he had at his disposal, so maybe when all the Conte type signings are done, we may just see another set up, plan B, 3-5-2 if you like.

Spurs under Conte are bit like the Thunderbirds saying…”anything could happen in” COYS

  • Allan says:

So far the transfer signs are looking good and at last getting players in early .
it will be interesting to see who we can get in for the back 3 and who we sell .
Very interesting times and at last a TW window to get excited about .

  • Niall D says:

    Haha PY
As you may note from my post I did say what do I know.
Fek me as you now know m8, I probably only seen 1/2 of each game m8 😜
I just thought that there was nothing to change up to.
No big CF tonperhaps lump a long ball up to
No creative Midfielder to stand over the ball, score a worldie, take free kicks (any body but Kane)
But indeed do take and understand Jods point.
It was more an observation on being able to change a game with differing skills sets.
I thought Conte didn’t quite fancy Hoj, and could he see the exit door.
But indeed Jod is probably right, as I have often said chum, I can see other people’s point of view 😉

  • jod says:

Niall D – Basically a manager has a choice to make. If he’s flexible he will want different options. The downside is if he loses a player he probably won’t have a direct replacement and may have to change tactics to accommodate the change in personnel. The other way is to stick to the two players for every position mantra with like for like substitutes. You gain strength in depth and can withstand injuries better but playing the same way can make you predictable. I’d argue that cost us against Wolves and Brighton last season but it seems to be how Conte wants to play. One thing for sure, its probably impossible to have both.

  • Niall D says:

    Got you Jod
I feel it also cost us, against Burnley away and in reality any “park the bus” team we come up against.
For me is there any sense in playing 3 CBs against a team who may have 2 shots on target.
Hence my bewilderment at having in reality 4 workman like defensive midfielders.
But as you say that’s Contes mind set and indeed I can see a point to it, if I don’t fully agree, with it..

  • block 108 spurs says:

Some good posts on here… Conte has a set format of team shape the 352/ 343. So needs players of similar ability, albeit better quality. So a player like bissouma will rotate with skippy hoj. bentacur. striker backup for harry kane is difficult and perhaps a young player we have could step up..dane, parrot ? Moura can cover for sonny / kulu.. Defence is 2 players away from being stronger than last year. The squad is beginning to look good for next season heavy games schedule. COYS

    • PompeyYid says:

block….great and true sentence “the squad is beginning to look good for next seasons heavy games schedule”

If we are impressed now wait until the next few players are signed/brought in.

      Exciting times ahead mate. COYS

  • Niall D says:

    100% agree folks
The squad does look stronger, and I indeed take the point of having similar players, I suppose when playing in Europe, you could easily slot in a player to rest another without upsetting the rhythm of the team so I do get that.
Bissouma is indeed a fantastic signing, he ran the show, against us in midfield over a couple of games, I think WW was first to notice him, but not sure, but I do know he was mentioned on these pages as a potential target.
We do need a bit of work done in central defence still, and another forward,.
With that said we are only 3 or 4 days into the TW, the internationals are just finishing, so it could still be very interesting over the Summer, looking forward to it.

By the way is Pape Sarr coming back from his loan with Metz? He seems a good prospect.
