Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has made little secret of his disappointment at the Premier League agreeing to change the transfer window so it shuts early in England, and he’s made plenty of comments over the summer describing it as a mistake and something that creates uncertainty and gives European clubs an advantage.
In a recent interview, as carried by Football London, Pochettino has doubled down on his earlier comments and now said that he believes chairman Daniel Levy won’t be alone in believing that the decision to change our deadline day was a ‘massive mistake’ with the benefit of hindsight.
“I wasn’t in agreement but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs. But I think he (Levy) and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake. I hope that we fix the problem for the next season. We need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League. Champions League teams can create a problem for a team like us and it’s so clear that I cannot be happy as a coach that in the last three weeks clubs from Europe can unsettle your team. For me it’s not common sense and we need to go back quick, hope they have a good conversation at the Premier League and go back quickly.”
Whilst some may well spin his words into being an attack on our chairman, it’s far from that, and whilst the idea behind the change was sensible enough in terms of trying to allow managers to prepare properly without the distraction, enacting it in the way the Premier League did has caused issues that plenty saw coming.
If the Premier League wanted to simplify the window, it should’ve been top flight only, allowing other deals to go through at any stage given the potential to still lose a key player.
