Inter Milan will not sign Tottenham Hotspur man on a free transfer – opinion

|

According to latest reports, Inter Milan are being linked with Jan Vertonghen and are keen to sign the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back on a free transfer. With the Belgian international’s contract expiring at the end of the season and Tottenham being no closer to agreeing an extension, Vertonghen’s future at the club is in doubt.

Inter are one of many clubs who would love a player of his ability in their squad, but it’s hard to see the Serie A side winning the race for his signature. Vertonghen has made 260 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham since his 2012-move from Ajax. He’s regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, so joining Inter would be selling himself short.

The Nerazzurri have struggled in Serie A for years and haven’t impressed in the Champions League for some time. They also have a lot of competition for a starting place at centre-back from Miranda, Stefan de Vrij and Milan Skriniar. Signing Vertonghen on a free transfer is virtually a no-brainer, but the Belgian may not be as keen to make the move.

Tottenham will try as hard as they can to tie him down to an extension before the campaign comes to a close, so it’s hard to see any club make serious progress in acquiring his services.
