Will Mauricio Pochettino outcast ever play for Tottenham again?

|

Cameron Carter-Vickers has been short of playing time since rising through the youth ranks to the fringes of the Tottenham first-team. The 20-year-old has made just four appearances for Spurs in all competitions and has been loaned out on a number of occasions in a bid for more playing time, but will he ever break into the senior set-up?

He recently told the Evening Standard (h/t Daily Express): “I feel like I am improving. The way I am, I just take it as it goes. At the moment I am at Swansea, trying to impress and get results there, and then when I go back to Tottenham at the end of the season then we’ll have to look at the picture from there.”

Carter-Vickers, who boasts six caps for the United States national team, has spent time on loan at Sheffield United (August 2017 – January 2018), Ipswich Town (January 2018 – May 2018) and Swansea City (August 2018 – present). He made 18 appearances for United, 17 appearances at Ipswich and four for Swansea so far.

The defender has spent more time on the bench than the pitch for Swansea, so it’s hard to see Mauricio Pochettino considering a return for the outcast. Carter-Vickers still has three years remaining on his deal at Tottenham, but he might be forced to spend the majority of his time on loan at other clubs.

With Jan Vortonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and now Juan Foyth for options at centre-back, Pochettino has more than enough depth in defence. If Carter-Vicker can’t break into the starting eleven at a Championship side, does he have any hope at Tottenham?
