Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp would surely be singing that Wilson Pickett classic on August 31st if the transfer deadline hadn’t been extended to 5pm on September 1st due to the Bank Holiday.

With just less than a week to go no one, least of all Harry, is entirely sure of the full squad he will have to select from until after the window closes.

Ugly rumours persist about Modric packing his bags for Old Trafford despite vigorous denials emanating from Harry and the player. Are they purely to destabilise the player and club due to our ‘triffic’ start?

The enigma that is Jermaine Jenas continues to be linked with Aston Villa, and a few bench or squad players will also be seriously considering their futures if they do not at the very least get a run out against Doncaster Rovers in the Carling Cup second round.

The backsides of players such as Hutton, Chimbonda, Dervite, O’Hara, Boateng, Bentley, and Gio will be twitching until the team is announced.Peter Crouch has been promised a start, but who is likely to partner him?

Our Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko has issued a come and get me plea to any club interested as he has decided that he is unwanted and unloved by the Spurs powers that be.Should have made a better fist of it last season Roman!!

Expect some twists and turns just like a ‘B’ rated movie before we can finally put the possibility of further deals to bed.One thing is for sure, if we lose one or two players in the next week then this will generate the necessary funds to bring in their replacements.

Names such as Michael Carrick, David Wheater, Sissoko, and Joe Cole have been bandied about, but these will only come to the fore if we lose some first with us having to sell before we can buy as stipulated by our Chairman Daniel Levy, and we may not sell until a definite target has been lined up to avoid weakening the squad.

Another central defender and a central midfielder to partner Wilson would be nice, while a quality left midfielder would be essential should Modders go, or another striker should someone be prepared to pay the going rate for Pav, although Obika could be brought back from his loan period as our fourth striker option.

Whatever happens you can expect feverish activity behind the scenes and through the revolving door at White Hart Lane. The nearer the deadline the busier and more frantic the phone calls and offers will become.

That is fine by me as long as we don’t end up with an eleventh hour Rasiak type deal which sadly and tragically reeked of desperation.Still, we could do what Arsenal did with Arshavin couldn’t we and take another forty-eight hours after the deadline to complete the necessary paperwork.

I mean it couldn’t possibly be one law for one and one for another inside the corridors of the FA and the Premier League could it?
