Further wing-back talks arise

|

Earlier today, I spoke of Spurs’ and Antonio Conte’s desire to upgrade their present options at right wing-back given the respectively underwhelming outputs of Matt Doherty, Djed Spence and Emerson Royal over varying stages of 2022. Read the piece focusing on our interest in Pedro Porro here.

As has been discussed all month and beyond, it turns out Pedro Porro is not the only right-sided wing-back Spurs have their eyes on.

Indeed, Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries has also been eyed up by Conte and Paratici. Earlier this month, I spoke of Inter naming their price for Dumfries, which reportedly stood at £25.9 million, and their financial woes have made them willing to dispense with the Dutchman in the winter market.

Today, Calcio Mercato’s Rudi Galetti (in Italian) revealed that Spurs’ interest in Dumfries and Porro has not gone away, and that Antonio Conte was seeking to offload Emerson Royal in the hope that it frees space – and funds – up for one of the two linked wing-backs to arrive in his stead.

Galetti goes on to say that Spurs’ interest in Dumfries has ‘never gone away’, and that they see the Dutchman as a more financially viable option than Porro due to his fee being around the €30m mark rather than the €44 million needed to meet Porro’s release clause.

I’m wary of this myself, as Inter tend to constantly set prices for their players then change their mind on said price just as negotiations seem to head in a promising direction.
