“Five Plus One” – Former Spurs Striker Gives His Thoughts On 20 y/o’s Reported Contract Talks

|

With it being believed that Tottenham Hotspur are already in talks with Academy graduate Japhet Tanganga over a new long term contract, former Spurs striker Darren Bent has given his thoughts on the type of deal we will be looking to tie the 20-year-old down to.

Reports of a new deal for the versatile defender emerged last week, and given his performances for us this season in his eleven appearances, a new deal for him makes perfect sense – especially whilst football is paused owing to the Coronavirus.

What Deal Should Tanganga Get?

5 Years

Speaking to Football Insider recently, Bent explained that he expected us to do our usual and offer a five year deal, with an option potentially in the players favour.

“Spurs are quite good at it, when it comes to tying people down to long-term contracts, they’ve always been very, very good at it and quite shrewd. When they get young players coming through or they sign a youngster from another club, it’s always the six-year contract, so it’s always the five plus one. I think the one might even be in their favour. I’d have signed the same deal when I went there, it was five years plus the one. It wouldn’t surprise me if Tanganga was to sign that type of deal. For me it’s a great deal if they can tie him down, he’s a very, very exciting prospect and he’s not let them down.”

I’m not sure Bent would’ve signed a deal like that when he arrived from Charlton Athletic back in 2007, but my memory doesn’t quite stretch that far back and it’s certainly not the deal we offered to Troy Parrott back in February, but as long as we get him tied down one way or another, that’s all that matters.
