“An Obvious Replacement” – Pundit Names Surprise Spurs Replacement For Vertonghen, But I Hope Not

|

With Tottenham Hotspur still to arrange a new contract for Belgian international centre-half Jan Vertonghen, most simply expect the 32-year-old modern day legend to move on when his contract expires at the end of the season (whenever that may now be) and although some are touting Japhet Tanganga as a natural replacement, speculation linking us with a move for out of favour Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is gaining traction.

The 30-year-old Croatian international, in fairness, doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as he’s always been prone to monumental errors and I don’t believe for a second Liverpool would be looking to cut their losses on the £20million purchase from Southampton, given he has featured 16 times for them this year.

Would You Welcome Lovren?

Yes, As A Stop Gap

No Chance

In any event, with the speculation rearing its head, former player and now pundit, Danny Mills, seems to think that given the lack of options at centre-half, Lovren would be an ‘obvious replacement’ for us.

“He is the self-professed greatest centre-half in the world. There seems to be a shortage of defenders out there at the moment. He has slipped down the pecking order at Liverpool and there will now be teams looking to snap him up. He is still a good player. Although he has quality he does make a mistake from time to time. There will be Premier League teams high up the table that are looking at his services. He would be an obvious replacement for Jan Vertonghen were he to leave Spurs this summer.”
