Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £30m and £3.9m in wages to sign Barcelona man

|

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Nelson Semedo with the future of Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier being unknown. The 25-year-old has been a regular at Barcelona this season but could be on his way out in the coming weeks after growing disgruntled at the Camp Nou. Semedo is reportedly available for £30m and earns £3.9m-a-year/£75k-per-week.

If Spurs bring Semedo to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Jan Vertonghen (£100k-per-week) will be the only defender in the squad earning more money. Semedo would even be in line to make more than Christian Eriksen (£75k-per-week). The Portuguese international has three years remaining on his deal, so Tottenham would have to pay more than £40m to sign him until 2022.

They could raise that money through the sale of Trippier, with the out-of-form right-back being linked with a £40m move to Manchester United, Napoli and Juventus. Semedo has won two Portuguese Liga titles, one Portuguese Cup, two Spanish Liga titles and one Copa Del Rey. He’s represented his country on nine occasions and is surprisingly cheaper than Trippier.

If Tottenham can bring Semedo through the door with change to spare from the 28-year-old’s proverbial sale, that would be good business.
