Explained: The key area Tottenham failed to strengthen in the transfer market

|

Tottenham made a real mess of strengthening their attack over the summer. Spurs went into the transfer window knowing they needed a striker as a backup for Harry Kane but have somehow managed to come away with fewer options upfront than they had last season.

The futures of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen were uncertain for months before the 2018/19 campaign had even ended, but Spurs weren’t prepared for their departures. Llorente was out of contract in June while Janssen was surplus to requirements.

If one striker left the club, somebody would have to come in to replace them. Tottenham allowed Llorente and Janssen to leave this summer, tried and failed to re-sign Llorente on a reduced contract and didn’t bring in a new addition before the transfer window shut.

They came close with Paulo Dybala but ultimately failed and will be overreliant on Kane again. Pochettino has Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son who can operate as makeshift strikers, but Tottenham have no natural backup in the squad.

Troy Parrott has been mentioned as a potential option upfront, with the Spurs boss a big fan of the youngster, but whether he can ease the scoring burden off Kane remains to be seen. Tottenham will need to fix the problem with their attack in the January transfer window.
