Report: Spurs boss concerned by lack of plan B following free agent snub

|

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly concerned that his Tottenham squad lack attacking depth following the departure of Fernando Llorente this summer.

The Daily Mail report that the Spurs boss is worried about his side’s absence of a quality back-up option on the bench in attack after the club were unable to tie Llorente down to a new deal before his contract with the Premier League club expired.

The report also claims that Tottenham offered the 34-year-old veteran attacker a new deal heading into the new season but with reduced terms that would see Llorente’s weekly wage drop to £75,000-a-week, the reason, it seems, as to why the Spanish striker rejected extending his stay with Spurs.

With the club also selling Vincent Janssen this summer to Liga MX side Monterrey for a reported £6.3m, according to Dutch outlet VI, Spurs headed into the season with just Harry Kane as a recognised striker in the senior squad.

Last season saw the likes of Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son play as striker as positional numbers from Transfermarkt show, but it seemingly appears that Pochettino has made a grave mistake not signing an established back-up for Kane heading into another season of Tottenham playing Champions League football.

With Spurs also set to be drawn into the third round of the League Cup, it appears that Pochettino might need to turn to youth until the winter transfer window opens for business in January, with 17-year-old striker Troy Parrott already training with the first-team, as reported by Football London.

Pochettino has made a costly error not investing into a backup for Kane with Llorente no longer an option, and the Spurs boss, as well as supporters, will be hoping their star striker can remain fit until the January transfer window so that the Tottenham boss can bring in a natural second-choice striker.
