Contact intensifies for wing-back

|

As November comes to a close and the January window edges ever closer, the rumours linking Spurs to a host of players have unsurprisingly intensified.

One of those players is Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, the wing-back currently on international duty with the Netherlands in the Qatar World Cup.

Some Spurs fans with decent memories may also remember him from our double header against PSV in the group stages of the Champions League back in 2018, when we drew in Eindhoven and beat the Dutchmen with a last-gasp Harry Kane goal in the return fixture.

Dumfries featured in both matches, doing little of note, but since his move to Inter last year, he has netted five times in his debut season and two more so far this campaign.

He has also caught the eye so far in Qatar, helping Louis van Gaal’s side advance to the last 16, where they will take on the USA this weekend.

Sean Walsh and Graeme Bailey of 90 min have today reported that Spurs have ‘asked’ Inter about the availability of the flying Dutchman in the upcoming January window.

The report states that Inter would be willing to let him go, but would prefer him on loan for the rest of the season, with Spurs understandably wanting him right away.

Walsh and Bailey also report that Chelsea’s interest in Dumfries is making matters a bit more complicated, and Inter could be encouraged to revel in the glory of a bidding war between the two rivals (a somewhat laughable notion, given our neighbours’ financial muscle).

As is the case with most Italian clubs at the moment (particularly following the hits the European market took from COVID-19), it is no secret that Inter have had financial difficulties for some time now.

It is also no secret whatsoever that right-wing back has been a problem position for Antonio Conte and all those associated with the Lilywhite of Tottenham Hotspur, with Matt Doherty not looking the same player as the one that was terrorising defences up and down the country (well, sort of) prior to Matty Cash’s crunching tackle over 7 months ago in Villa Park, Emerson Royal flattering to deceive on a consistent basis, and Djed Spence still not deemed ready for the rigours of Conte’s demands.

This transfer, were it to materialise, would therefore seemingly tick the box of satisfying Inter’s financial demands, and if he were to hit the ground running in Lilywhite, Dumfries’ recruitment would also tick the seemingly hefty right-wing back box on Conte’s wishlist. One to keep an eye on…

This must be VS after the atomic war we waited for for the last 80 years.
