Good luck to Christian Eriksen. How we miss someone with his silky skills.

  • Geofspurs says:

WW …. I won’t. His sily skills were only visible in twenty percent of his games and mainly again lesser opposition. I think we need much more consistency than that.

    • wentworth says:

Geof. Eriksen was a superb attacking midfielder who linked brilliantly with Dembele, Dele and Kane. We signed the lightweight, one legged Lo Celso to replace him ….hmmm.
      123. Here are a couple that could transform our miserable squad… Lamptey and Bissouma. 2 very strong attacking players.
But Levy does not like buying top emerging players. He prefers unknown cheapies or disastrous duds like Lo Celso, Doherty, N’Dombele, Bergweijn, Emerson, Bryan Gil,etc.

  • Geofspurs says:

    Oops …. ‘Silky’

  • Frank says:

See we are now involved in bringing in a couple of hacks from Juventus as a poor alternative too Dias. These two are in the La Celso, Royal mould, not good enough, with little if any sell on value, and difficult to shift when they prove to be a mistake. Can we start acting like a big club, signing top players, in order to compete properly for trophies. The £1,000,000 emporium is unnecessary if it is only half fill.

  • 123spurs says:

Name some players you would like us to sign frank

    • PompeyYid says:

Haha Very good 123, though it must also be players we “could” sign, could! being a massive word in the situation we find ourselves in.
Mind you if Conte steers us to and secures CL, at the moment its realistic, next season then we will be more of an attraction to certain types of players. COYS

  • BelgianSpur says:

Geof – Eriksen had his flaws but with hindsight, he was still an asset.

If any of the players we’ve bought to try and replace him are proof of anything, it’s that Eriksen had a much bigger impact than you are to admit.

Is De Bruyne better? Absolutely. But we can do/have done a lot worse than Eriksen recently. I for one rated him then, and possibily rate him even more now, given what we have had to endure since.

However, performance aside, it’s still a wonderful story to see him play top level football again.

  • wentworth says:

Spot on Belgian. Eriksen was a crucial link in Poch’s superb run as the best coach we’ve had for years. Just look what has happened since we lost Poch, Eriksen, Alderwereild, Vertongen, Dembele and even Dele.
We are a shadow of that set up.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    I’ve been out n about, scouting…

There’s a young Swedish lad I think we should get. Midfielder/attacker, Dejan Kulusevski. Quick, skiful, strong, scores nice goals…

I’ve also advised the club to make a move for `Dejan’s Juve team mate; A chap named Rodrigo Bentancur. Midfielder. Uruguayan. Strong. Skilful…

Also, I’ve been told that Ndombele will be loaned to Lyon… I also think that Dele Ali might be tempted to join Frank at the Toffees…But…

    Don’t quote me!

  • jod says:

We’ve apparently signed Bentancur and got Kulusevski on loan with an option to buy. Reading the blurb on Bentancur he’s supposed to be some kind of superman and can play any position in midfield, attacking and defending, and do everything. What the reality is I’ve no idea. Kulusevski is supposed to be an attacker but again can play “wide or centrally”. What we have needed for a long time is someone who can play as a centre forward in English conditions, not sure this will be the player to do it, sound more like an understudy to Son and Moura, but hope springs eternal. Of course since neither player has played in England before it will be next season before we can really make a judgement.

  • BelgianSpur says:

We’ve left it late but we are springing into action at last.

It remains to be seen if the 2 Juve boys are genuine reinforcements or nothing more than depth pieces – both were peripheral players for Juve. Both have upside too, so time will tell I suppose.

We’ve done well to move on some expensive failures I suppose. Tanguy to Lyon, Lo Celso to Villareal is looking good, Alli to Everton the same, and while i wouldn’t give up on Gil quite yet, regular football will do him good.

Those deals plus a loan for Rodon would be a job well done, as far as outgoings go.

Will we see a last minute incoming transfer? Unlikely but who knows.

If nothing else, this window will have been a step in the right direction, as far as the rebuild is concerned. Somewhat underwhelming arrivals, but lots of unwanted players moved on, thereby freeing up funds for the future.

  • wentworth says:

The good news…we seem to have made a couple of unknown signings. We seem to have offloaded some duds….N’Dombele, Gil and hopefully Lo Celso.

Bad news is ……. we failed to sign Lamptey and Bissouma. And we still have Emerson and Doherty. Also we still have a clown in charge of our country (just).

On balance a very slight improvement on 30th January.

  • jod says:

There seems to be some rewriting of history when it comes to Eriksen. For most of his time at Spurs he was a terrific player, even if he sometimes went missing when the going got tough. That was really the big difference between him and De Bruyne who never goes missing. In the last season and a half though Eriksen seemed to lose his way, his form disappeared and it never came back. So when people talk about him they need to be specific about what part of his career they are talking about. We are perhaps seeing the same pattern with Dele, although he seems to me to be working harder to try and get his form back than Eriksen ever did.

  • wentworth says:

Jod. I enjoyed the ride with both Eriksen and Dele. Yep De Bruyne is a step above but then we have had N’Dombele and Lo Celso ….I have NOT enjoyed the ride with these expensive benchwarmers who have added very little in the past 2 years.
We could do far worse than an in form Eriksen and Dele. Some great goals and performances. Can you remember any of Lo Celso’s great goals? No, I thought not.

  • Spurfect One says:

Pi$$ poor window. 3 key positions not filled in RWB (Key for Conte’s system) A striker (Still one senior striker at the club) and a LCB, how many times are we going to suffer Davinson Sanchez switch to the left and look like a rabbit in headlights? I understand January is notoriously difficult to get deals done, but getting one key position filled at least would have been encouraging, instead we sign a right sided attacking player and a CM, 2 positions that were not exactly glaring necessities!

  • 123spurs says:

40 mil for dele, levy you genius. Good window all round, 3 out and 2 from a big club in juve.

    • Love totty says:

I disagree that defense and wingback were priority positions. Our main weakness is midfield. Whether these Old Lady boys will improve things we’ll see. Hopefully they can take and give a pass. Hoj and Skippy can fight for a place but not together as they are limited to breaking up play. So glad to have moved out the malcontents.

  • TK says:

What were the priority needs heading into this window?

    backup striker
    deep midfield creator
    shallow midfield creator (WTF?)
    right wingback
    centre back(s)
    and more…

Indeed, we need new blook at every position that isn’t filled by either Kane or Son, and I’m still not convinced that Kane isn’t well into decline (at least in spirit).

Did we fill any of these needs? maybe not.

but we did need 3 new starters at a minimum and we didn’t get them

we are left with thin gruel at a tepid temperature.

    If only Conte could play.

  • TK says:

lol, I’m not sure if I was trying to type new blood or a new bloke, but what’s the difference? We needed some new blokes to get blooded.
The problem is, at the close of the window, we still do.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. Your post at 5:50 made a good point re Eriksen. He was a good player at the start of his career with Spurs. My problem is that during the latter half of his career he was rarely able to control the MF against the better clubs when it really mattered. We need a creative midfielder who does not go missing …. like the one we used to have …. you know …. whats-his-name!

    • wentworth says:

Try Luka Modric Geof. Or maybe Glen Hoddle. Or Ossie Ardiles. Or John White.

      • Geofspurs says:

I was obviously referring to Modric …. but aren’t we lucky to have had so many gret players. Be nice to find another one!

  • Niall D says:

Well it’s all over bar the shouting.
I feel this TW was more about whom we got rid of, rather than who we signed.
Did we get “podium” signings who knows, are they better than those we who departed again who knows.
But I do feel that these new signings will provide the missing drive from midfield, or at least a positive alternative, to what we have.
There is still work to be done, but I feel these “outings” are a very positive step.
We do need more exits over the Summer. RB and CD still need addressed.
But (for me) we are travelling in the right direction.
Tried this post before but lost it. 😉

  • BelgianSpur says:

Comparing Modric with Eriksen is like comparing apples with oranges. Modric has always played deeper where his main assignment was in fact controlling the midfield, whereas Eriksen has always played much further forward, or often on the left for us, where the main objective was to create chances in the final third.

Modric occasionally ventured forward, Eriksen occasionally tracked back, but the tactical assignments were different from the get go.

In a,4231 Modric often played in the 2, whereas Eriksen almost exclusively played in the 3.

You can’t knock either player for failing to do something which wasn’t his primary job.

Eriksen’s Spurs career seemed to go downhill after Levy refused to give him improved wages to match his contributions. I think Levy got it wrong there and Eriksen lost his desire from that point onwards.

It’s different to Dele in that Dele’s downturn doesn’t really coincide with anything happening on the pitch or with his contract.

Dele needs to decide whether he wants to put himself through the rigours of being a top footballer, which we know he can be if he wants. I don’t think that has ever been an issue with Eriksen – he just got disillusioned with life at Spurs, not football.

Anyways, I wish Dele the best. Thanks for the memories and good luck. Hope Lampard can fix him.
