Champions League Groups Confirmed

|

Spurs have tonight been drawn into the Champions League’s (CL) Group D with German Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt, French runners-up Marseille, and Portuguese runners-up Sporting Lisbon.

The groups in full are as follows:

Group A: Ajax, Liverpool, Napoli, Rangers.

Group B: Porto, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Club Bruges.

Group C: Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Viktoria Plzen.

Group D: Eintracht Frankfurt, Tottenham Hotspur, Marseille, Sporting Lisbon.

Group E: AC Milan, Chelsea, RB Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb.

Group F: Real Madrid, RB Leipizig, Shakhtar Donetsk, Celtic.

Group G: Manchester City, Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund, Copenhagen.

Group H: PSG, Juventus, Benfica, Maccabi Haifa.

With all due respect to the three other sides in the group, I think we’ve done well to get this draw. Our group has no top-10 ranked teams according to Euro Club Index – we’re the highest ranked club in the group, as shown below:

Thus, it would not be unreasonable to argue that our group can be labelled as the opposite of the cliched “group of death”. Nevertheless, we’ve been here before – one recalls our ill-fated CL campaign of 16/17, where a group containing Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco, and CSKA Moscow had many Spurs fans prematurely celebrating progression into the last 16…we know how that went!

Since then, we’ve progressed from the group stage in both seasons we’ve played Champions League football. We made it into the last 16 the following campaign, and of course, reached the final in 2019, leaving us with a record of progression from three out of four CL groups.

Interesting draw, no A class teams, no C class teams. Could be a very tight group. All 4 teams on with of a chance of top2 to progress.

Well I’ve seen worse draws, all games, winnable maybe a banana skin here or there.
    Won’t celebrate just yet.
    But a decent enough draw.

There is no reason to fear any of the other teams in the group. That’s not to say we’ll beat them all–anything can go awry. But there should be no match where our lads go onto the pitch in awe of the other side. We should advance.

That having been said, hold onto your hats, the ride could go in any direction. this is football.

I think its a good draw!

Yes maybe if our attitude doesn’t change, which I think it has, there is the odd “Banana skin” slip up, win all our home games then we are through, simple as that.

    Looking forward to it. COYS

Precisely Pompey, in the past we’ve had favourable groups in Europe and our attitude has seen us crash out at the first hurdle, Conte seems to have shifted the mentality so here’s hoping this gets us over the line

There’s no such thing as an easy group in the champions league, unlike the Europa where you can get a really weak set of opponents. But we have probably got the best of the groups this time round, if we don’t get through its down to us. I always think the key is the away games, pick up points there and no one will really look forward to coming to our ground.

Out team as it is can play against any of the others in this group without fear. That said, our team still has to perform, but it should go into this competition without fearing anyone we will play–home or away.

A good draw for spurs… Some of our previous CL years where we exited from an “easy” group was in part an attitude of complacency / easy easy game by our players at the time. Now we have conte and his intense win every game attitude we should see spurs succeed in these games. One concern is the german team won Europa League Cup so we need to be at 100% effort in all games. COYS
