£30m-rated ace compared to Ballon d’Or winner could be ideal backup for Spurs talisman – Opinion

Tottenham might have spent big last summer, but one area of the pitch fans agree that Spurs should had addressed a replacement for Fernando Llorente.

The veteran Spanish attacker was only a bit-part player for Tottenham in his two seasons in north London, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the 34-year-old striker only managed 21 starts under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, Llorente’s impact on the side was massive, scoring vital goals against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City in last year’s Champions League knockout stages.

His target man role in the side was the perfect short-term fix for when Harry Kane was unavailable due to injury, and now five months on from Llorente leaving the club, Tottenham find themselves in a situation where they need to find a suitable backup for the England captain who again has found himself on the injury table.

Will Tottenham be active in the January window?

Yes! We have to be!

No! Daniel Levy won't spend

Which is where Krzysztof Piatek comes in, with The Guardian reporting that Spurs have joined the race for the AC Milan striker, who the Serie A side value at £30m despite a fairly quiet season from the Polish international.

The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the red half of Milan has alerted many clubs to the availability of Piatek, who last year was compared too and praised by striking legend and former Ballon d’Or winner Andriy Shevchenko via The Daily Mail, and for Tottenham, the ex-Genoa attacker could be the ideal forward to fill the void left by Kane.

As a scouting report from Football BH shows, Piatek is a versatile attacker who can serve many roles in the striking positions from a false nine to an advanced forward always lurking in the penalty area, and whilst he isn’t the target man replacement for Llorente, the 24-year-old forward certainly knows how to put the ball in the back of the net when the service is there.

A replacement for Kane is crucial heading into this period of the season, and Piatek could just be the player to serve this role if Tottenham can win the race for the once proficient Milan no. 9.
