WSL Report: Leicester 1-2 Spurs

|

Spurs Women’s WSL season kicked off with a 2-1 win at the King Power Stadium against Leicester City, courtesy of two stunning efforts from Ashleigh Neville and debutant Drew Spence.

Although Leicester pulled a goal back thanks to Spence’s own goal just before the hour mark, a comeback was never truly on, and, in truth, the win was more comfortable than the final scoreline suggests.

Spurs gave debuts from the start to new signings Amy Turner at the back, Drew Spence and Angharad James in midfield, with fellow summer arrival Ellie Brazil making an earlier entry into proceedings much earlier than anticipated as a 16th-minute substitute following an injury to Rosella Ayane.

The early setback, although slightly stilting an early period of dominance established by the visitors, did not prevent Spurs’ quality from telling as the first half wore on. Indeed, with 35 minutes on the clock, Neville picked up the ball on halfway, and, running forward unchallenged, hit an absolute peach of an effort from 40 yards that Levell in the Leicester goal had no answers for. 1-0 to Spurs.

Full of confidence, Spurs searched for a second goal that temporarily alluded them as Levell made a decent save from Jess Naz, but the visitors did not have long to wait to double their advantage. Indeed, Spence marked her debut with a lovely finish into the bottom left-hand corner to send us 2-o up going into the interval.

However, Spence went from the sublime to the ridiculous after the break, shanking an innocuous-looking Leicester corner into her own net, making the end nervier than it really ought to have been.

Nevertheless, for all of the Foxes’ huff and puff, they did not have the telling quality to restore parity before the full-time whistle confirmed a victory for the ladies, who join the men in capping off the weekend victorious against the East Midlands outfit. Next up – just like the lads – an NLD awaits!

Thanks for this thread, Omar. It’s good to see Spurs WSL team become part of the family. We’ve bought quite a few needed players during the TW and it looks like we will continue with the progress we’ve made over the last two seasons. There were two cracking Spurs goals in this game.

Seems like it’s still just you and I that take an interest in our WSL side Geof. I was celebrating my birthday with family yesterday so didn’t get to watch the game, I’m planning to watch the full replay later today. I did get to see some of the Liverpool v Chelsea game which turned out to be something of a surprise!

It does seem that way,TQ. In regard to the WSL, I feel like I am watching something quite brilliant evolving. I was surprised and disappointed with the Chelsea result, but did see quite a few new faces that will become an integral part of the team this season.

Spurs did enough to show that this should be an interesting season. Neville’s (? Spelling) goal blew me away. Why would anyone try a shot from there?!

I was indeed thinking you two would appreciate this thread. Nice touch from omar.

I’m already watching too many football games as it is, I can’t start with women’s football or my wife will kill me.

Cheers, BS. Yes, I hope Omar continues to provide Spurs WSL threads. I have the same problem with the amount of games to watch. But I probably watch as many WSL games as PL games now.

I have been watching WSL for a few years now. The league has got stronger as england women proved in euro 22 this season, and man city have had a lot of top players leave. Spurs are a work in progress. As in PL men’s game the best players go to the big clubs for trophies and wages, so the women tend to be the same IMO.
