World Cup Round-Up: Kane’s penalty heartbreak, Perisic’s Croatian masterclass and Richarlison’s injury woes

|

Penalty misses, injuries and bookings galore, the quarterfinals of the World Cup cooked up a whole load of drama for Tottenham’s international stars.

When rounding-up the quarterfinals, you can only start in one place and that is of course Harry Kane’s heart-breaking penalty miss, in England’s 2-1 loss to France. Clearly distraught at full-time, Kane’s miss hurt the nation but arguably felt more personal for us Spurs fans.

The Spurs striker had scored England’s equaliser earlier in the game – becoming England’s joint all-time top goal scorer, level with Wayne Rooney on 53 goals.

Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris was of course between the sticks for France and spoke about Kane’s miss after the game:

“We had a text after the game, it was not easy to find the words straight after the game”

Ivan Perisic on the other hand, enjoyed success from the penalty spot as his Croatia side defeated tournament favourites Brazil on penalties. Perisic and Croatia provided a very resilient performance to come back from 1-0 down in extra-time, to securing back-to-back World Cup semi-finals.

The game also included Spurs forward Richarlison, who reportedly picked up a knock in the warm-up but still ended up managing to play 84 minutes of football.

Croatia will now face off against another South American giant in the name of Argentina – an Argentina side that of course includes Spurs stalwart Cristian Romero.

Romero’s side got their own taste of penalty success coming out on top against Netherlands, after playing out an exciting 2-2 draw in regular time.

How many days has it been since anyone wrote a comment? Is this truly the end of VS? Surely looking that way.

mitch, Omar: hope you’re still getting paid. frustrating, I imagine, to put the work into it and no one’s around to notice.

It was a good trip while it lasted. but it surely is looking to attract flies to the body soon.

Roberto Biaggio. brilliant player who only gets thought of today because of a similar missed penalty flying over the bar. HK the new Biaggio?
