Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has hailed Wilson Palacios as being “Vital” for the team and praised the player for his fantastic attitude on and off the pitch.

Wilson who has looked an absolute bargain since joining from Wigan in January has added so much to the team with his work rate and physical approach to the game, coupled with a genuine quality.

Redknapp said of the great man: ‘He’s a vital player for us. He gets after the ball, he works, he’s strong. His attitude as well, the way he trains ever day.

‘He might give the ball away occasionally but he works hard to get it back and he’s a big factor in our improvement. He puts a shift in when he doesn’t have the ball.

That attitude has rubbed off on everyone.’

Following the heartbreak of his brother`s death and the dignified manner in which he dealt with the whole situation, Harry and the fans have taken the player to their hearts and the admiration of Wilson Palacios as a man, have gone off the scale, something that has become all too rare in today`s game.

Harry continued: ‘What he’s been through with his family, you want him to succeed,’ said Redknapp.

‘He’s an easy going, lovely lad who just wants to play football.

‘He’s pleased and honoured to be here and play for Spurs. That’s why the fans love him and you want him to do well.’

You would like to think that in years to come, we will all be looking at the likes of Palacios and Luka Modric as Tottenham legends, not just for their football ability, but for their attitude on and off the pitch. Both are players who appear to have raised the benchmark on the pitch and the training ground and the willingness to work as well as being players of the highest quality.

In an age when fans perceive footballers as overpaid, prima donnas, the idea that the likes of Palacios remain humble and grateful for the opportunity they have been given, is like a breath of fresh air and that is as welcoming as the ability and commitment they show week in week out on the pitch. If only we had nine more like them…
