It’s been a steady start to the 2019/20 Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur. Two games in, a decent, albeit late, victory over Aston Villa was backed up with a more than creditable point against Manchester City.

The latter was far from a great game given their control, but there will be those who feel that if we can defend a touch better, but maintain that kind of clinical nature up top, we’ll certainly put more teams to the sword than we don’t this year.

It’s a different game up next weekend for manager Mauricio Pochettino though as we welcomed Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side to White Hart Lane for our third game of the year.

It’s not a happy time at St James’ Park with ongoing criticism of Mike Ashley only being compounded by the decision to appoint Bruce in the first place, but from a Spurs point of view there’s absolutely no reason not to be confident that we’ll pick up another win and consign them to three straight defeats on Sunday afternoon.

For those looking for progress, I guess this goes down as one of those matches that becomes a must win simply because many can’t see us dropping points, so by default, it becomes the proverbial banana skin.

I’ll continue to have a glass half full approach and simply wonder how many we’ll score.

  • I did see that R Madrid allegedly / reportedly told eriksen to stay at spurs, run down his contract and in Jan R Madrid will put in a pre transfer paperwork so he can leave on a free transfer. This .. if true is disgraceful. UFEA should look at this situation. Levy will be furious as well…

  • That would be a typical example of their underhand transfer dealings block 108, they barely even hide the fact they tap up players and get away with it time after time.

  • As far as the game goes tomorrow……we musn’t underestimate or show any complacency against the Toons, while they look a very ordinary side overall they do have some very useful attacking players who can take advantage of our defensive fragility. They were very poor at Norwich but gave a good gooners side a decent game in their season opener only losing by a single goal.

  • As N’Dombele is injured (minor) this my team for tomorrow…

    Kwp Toby Verts Rose
    Sissoko Winks
    Maura Lamela Son

This team has speed and solidarity in defence, thus am hoping for a solid win, but as has already been said we must not underestimate the Magpies.

Mind Poch could and maybe not think like me and field a team he thinks capable of beating NUFC, as in using his squad. COYS

  • haha……Manu paid for the arrogance displayed by their manager who always gives an impression of entitlement because of who they are, this transfers to the pitch as over confidence/underestimation of opposition. We need to guard against the same and treat all opponents with the same respect.

  • Great result for us today with Palace beating Utd – away aswell! Liverpool probably did us a favour by beating Arsenal – them and City are going to go at it again for the Prem. I think our aim is to go as far as we can and probably fall into 3rd place come the end of the season – don’t think we’re yet strong or settled enough to maintain a title challenge. A comfortable 3rd would be perfect for the time being as we look to enter chapter/phase 2 of Poch’s reign.

  • Eriksen has to start for me – with Lo Celso and Dele out – we need his creativity in the middle to dictate our attacking play. Also we could do with some fresh attacking legs on the bench in case things don’t go to plan and they’re needed in the 2nd half. Lo Celso and Sonny on the bench would provide this. Lamela and Moura deserve to start following good pre-seasons and a great start in their first 2 matches. Verts needs some game time, so does Davies – hopefully Poch can find a way of giving it to them.

  • Dier’s another who could do with some participation – going to be needed as the season progresses so the earlier he gets bedded in again the better. We could go with Sissoko and Dier tomorrow and Verts and Davies at the back – get minutes into all of them. I’d probably still go with the following : Lloris, KWP, Toby, Verts, Rose, Sissoko, Winks, Eriksen, Lamela, Moura and Kane. But I’d be looking at getting minutes into Davies, Dier and Sonny as early as possible hopefully when we are in the lead!

  • Before the Villa match, as I usually do, I picked a team that I thought Poch would go for and not one that I would prefer to see start. Eriksen was in there but I wrote that he was the one player I wasn’t sure that MP would pick. Not because of him possibly leaving but because I thought his form wasn’t that good in pre-season. Unfortunately I didn’t seen his form improve at all vs City. And personally, I think he should be on the bench for this one. But will Poch?

As far as Jan is concerned, Poch has reiterated that he is picking Sanchez over him, because he thinks he is the better choice right now. Although he hasn’t really said why Jan might not be his preferred choice. So who knows?

I’m not going to pick a team for this one because I’m not sure at all who MP will likely pick. Especially with more players being available. He could and maybe should change it up a bit, given that we have not really performed that well up until now… But, we are just 2 games in and the results have been good ones… Again, who knows?

Will the Magpies park the bus? If they do, will we struggle to score. If they don’t can we thrash them? I reckon they will probably park the bus and that we can still thrash them anyway. But to do that, maybe Poch does need to play Eriksen and, Eriksen will then need to start playing some decent football as well as the rest of them… We’ll see…

    Up the Spurs!

  • If Eriksen goes before the summer window closes we should forget Dybala and all of the complications surrounding him and go all out for James Maddison in January, he creates so many chances for his side. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he replaces Dele/Lingard in the England team in the upcoming internationals.

  • Though some of us write the team we would like to see, as others have said, Poch will put out the side he believes capable of beating our opponents of/on that day, basically he is using his squad.

Somewhere, cannot remember where, Poch said picking Sanchez over Verts was a matter of speed difference, and a strong rumbling says Toby is going to sign an extension, wouldn’t that be excellent.

As for today/this afternoon it is agreed, that the Magpies will park the bus, so it is our job to try and score early, and hopefully we will, thus going on to achieve comfortable “home” win, thus moving into 3rd/4th in the Prem. COYS

  • Geofspurs….ok am a numpty! lol, you could be right there, so for me come on 30+ miles away neighbour’s, the Cherries. COYS

  • Hope Poch doesn’t do the dirty on Lucas again after his equaliser against City and keep him on the bench. According to a long piece in the Observer Poch didn’t even have the courtesy of telling our hat-trick hero that he was dropped before he announced the team for the Euro final. Bad man management in my opinion and it could come back to bite him – and us.

  • Mammoth possession and first shot on target on 32 minutes after nc one up.
Sanchez having to be covered by rose.
    What’s verts really done….

  • Its scary that we have had only one shot. Second its concerning that yet again out done at back so easily. Third, Kane mot in the game, no shots even. We miss creativity of Dele and Eriksen, lets hope Celso is good when he is ready but still feel we need another creative player if eriksen goes. If we drop points in this game it will be criminal. Brand new stadium is it working. Can’t under estimate any PL club. Think we need to look at why we always go behind, not able to start the game and take a lead.
