“We Need To Improve” – Pochettino Strikes The Right Chord After City Point

|

With Tottenham Hotspur already having three points in the bag from our opening day victory over newly promoted Aston Villa, it was all eyes to today’s trip to the Etihad Stadium to face reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City, and plenty were hopeful that we’d make it back to back wins.

That faith was seriously misplaced, but that’s not necessarily a criticise as Spurs showed we had a backbone, spirit and some fight. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring, but Erik Lamela had us back on level terms within three minutes but we did go into the halftime break 2-1 down as Sergio Aguero made his mark on the game.

Lucas Moura had an almost immediate impact following his introduction as a substitute and with the Video Assistant Referee system ruling out a late winner for them, whilst the Match Stats make for pretty grim reading, history will show we took a point and forced City into dropping points on home soil for the first time since December 2018.

Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, manager Mauricio Pochettino said of our efforts on the day.

“I’m very pleased with a point but also know we need to improve. We are in a process where we need to improve in all areas and the team is going to improve step by step, but we need time. It was an unbelievable goal by Lucas Moura. Always when you play a team like Manchester City, you have to play your best. We need to accept that VAR. I was a little bit critical of VAR but now we have to accept the rules. Now it benefits us. No doubt it won’t benefit us at other times. It’s a rule we need to accept.”
